I cant install this update please help

i should also say that all the windows 7 updates from your links fails to be installed

would it be a good idea to go through windows update after i have finished installing the updates, just to see if im missing any of them?

KB915597 is a generic KB number, applied to ALL Defender and MSE updates, and can update anything up to 8 times a day!

it has no relevance to the general state of your system - ignore it.

If you go to Windows Updates, what does it show being offered?
If you go to Update History, what is the last Failed update? Does it show as having been installed later?

the latest failed update was a monthly quality rollup update called kb4534310

OK- that's the January 2020 update, so not too bad
Does KB4534310 still show in the waiting updates list (it shouldn't)
Does kb4537820 show in the waiting updates list?
What actual updates do still show in the list?

it shows 4 updates
kb4534310, kb915597, kb4539601 and kb4503548

We can ignore the 915597 update, so that leaves us with 3 to worry about...

so that's the one we need to concentrate on.

Please reboot, run a new Search for Updates, then unselect everything except that one - and try installing it.

If it errors out, what is the exact error message you get?

i think i have installed it previously, but i uninstalled it again since i didnt need framework 4.8
is this the last update there is?

4.8 is effectively an upgrade, rather than an update - and there will be updates to it that will come down afterwards.

i installed it as well as the updates that comes to it
windows now only shows kb4534310 and kb4539601
it fails to install both of them
i get an error message that says the updates werent installed
error code 8024200d

That error means that there's something missing in what WU has downloaded...

Did you do another Check for Updates before attempting to install those? - if not, do one now, and try again.

If only those two come back : IGNORE KB4539601 - its only a Preview, and shouldn't even appear as a preferred update.

In the File Explorer, navigate to C:\Windows\System32\ and locate the file wuaueng.dll.
Right-click the file and click Properties.
Click the Details tab, to find the Product Version.
What version is the file?

That's probably the right version - mine is a little later (24542), but may be more recent than the jan update.

We probably need to clear the cache and force a new download.

Rename the Windows Update temporary folders:

1. Click "Start", in "Start Search" item, type: "notepad" (without quotes) and press Enter.
2. Copy the following commands and then paste them into the opened Notepad window:
net stop wuauserv
net stop CryptSvc
ren %windir%\system32\catroot2 catroot2.old
ren %windir%\SoftwareDistribution sold.old
net start CryptSvc
net start wuauserv
pause
3. After pasting the above commands, please close the Notepad window. Choose "Save" when you are prompted to save the file. Type "rename.bat" as the file name and save it to the Desktop.
4. Return to the Desktop, right click the rename.bat file and choose "Run as administrator".
5. You will see a DOS-like window processing -
6. It will wait for a keystroke - check that there are no errors, and then hit any key - it should close without ceremony.

Reboot.

Now try Windows Update to see if the issue has been resolved.

Those are the last 2 ever - so kinda important

Have you tried downloading them from the Windows Update Catalog?
Search on the KB number, and try installing them - ...310 first!

i just tried searching for it on microsofts update catalog, it shows two updates with the same name for windows 7. if i install the first one it says this update can't be installed on your computer. if i install the second it downloads and installs, but after installing it says windows was unable to install this update on your computer.

What was the error code? (assuming it gave you one)
There are always two updates - one for 32bit (x86) and one for 64-bit (x64) Windows - you need to install the one with x86 in the filename.

Check the Update History - what was the error code the last time it tried to install KB4534310 ??
