I have a icon in control panel & it does nothing.

I have a icon in control panel & it does nothing.
After going to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ControlPanel\NameSpace

it has 56 items & control panel has 51
any ideas on how to find it

Hello Jerry,

Before you do any of the below, be sure to right click on the long number CLSID key in the left pane and click on Export before you delete it. This way if it's not the right one, you will be able to just double click on the exported REG file to restore it.


Once there, look at each long number CLSID key in the left pane under NameSpace until you see one that has nothing entered in the right pane for (Default). If you spot it, then you can just right click on and delete the long number CLSID key for it.

I can match up all the control panel stuff but these

windows sidebar properties
workspaces center
view avallable networks
tablet pc settings
infrared
Text to speech
network map
windows sideshow
pen and touch

see anything that does not belong there

Nope, I have all of those by default as well.

Does it open anything when you click on it.

If you right click on the blank one in the CP, click on Create Shortcut (if available), look at the properties page of this new shortcut on the desktop, does it give you any type of information that may help ID it?

If none of the above worked, then you might see if restarting the computer may remove it.

If still not, then you might do a system restore using a restore point dated before it was in the Control Panel if you know when it happened.

No it will not open anything I did the shortcut & properties showed nothing, system restore did not help does not go back very far even after clicking show more.
Any other ideas

Just as a test to see if it may be just a glitch, reset your folder view settings to default to see if it's still there after the restart.

Got it did the create shortcut again & to properties went to shortcut tab then the change icon button and looked where the icon was coming from.
Well when I started this thread I had just changed some system files for a custom theme.
It was the TimeDate.bak.cpl I renamed in C:\Windows\System32 & C:\Windows\SysWOW64 & removed them, the .cpl has something to do with the control panel.
