Hi guys!

Well, i was checking that startups options were right (with no new program trying to star when my sistem starts) and i found Hpservice.exe in my startup list,, then i went to services, and i found it there (just for confirmation), then i opened the task manager, process tab and there it was.

i found on internet that Hpservice.exe:
"HP's 3D Driveguard senses sudden motion by your laptop and parks the drive, for example, if you drop your laptop or knock it off a desk. it uses few resources, so unless it is causing problems, do not delete"
you know that trojans and other malwares can take any name....

Ok, the purpose for the Hpservice.exe is great, can help to save data, but....
i did not installed it.

so, where did come from?

Hello kharl & Welcome to SevenForums! :geek:

When you buy machines from brands there's usually a lot of default software following with it such as your hpservice.exe. HP does recommend that you'll leave it alone, and would take that as an advice and just leave it.
It's unlikely that it will slow down your startup.

Again, welcome,
FredeGail

My specialty is clean reinstalling Factory OEM and there is almost no factory utility I will recommend keeping except this one which parks the HD reader for safe transport.

But it normally only comes to my attention if there is a missing driver in Device Manager after clean reinstall.

Yeah, im quite sure THAT soft was not there before and i did not installed it, i checked the windows update and was not within none of the updates, so where did come from?
and i check on HPwebsite and the hpservices belong to the "HP data mobile protection 3D" that my laptops incorporates, but is not compatible with windows 7. that add more suspicious signs, what i confirm that i did not installed that.

the purpose of the hpservices.exe is pretty good, but i did not installed it, so that why i suspects for a malware with that name.

It comes preinstalled on HP computers. If you only turned it off in Startup, the program likely remains.

Are you saying you didn't install this because you have clean reinstalled your HP with an Installation DVD and added no HP utilities?

Then check Device Manager as it may have a driver which was delivered by Windows Updates.

If so, I would keep it because it is one piece of HP bloatware which is useful.

HP driveguard is indeed compatible with win7, I have a recently purchased HP that has it installed. But hpservice.exe running without driveguard doesnt make sense. The driveguard software has a gui accessible by the user and also some settings that can be configured by the user, you can even set it to show an icon in the system tray.

Proof of the pudding is in the eating. Set the service to manual start and stop it if its running right now, if something misbehaves or complains that the service is stopped, you'll know. Also run a malware scan with MBAM.

ok, but i thought that because my laptop does not have support for windows 7 then the hp driveguard too. so, where can i get the software and driver to make it works properly...?

Look on the Support Downloads webpage for your exact model HP.

You can also extract apps from your HP Recovery Disks using this method:
Extract HP 3rd Party Software from RecovCD
mmm.. that should be the right way but i can not get it through hp support page because if i enter my laptop model it will only shows me support for windows 2000, XP and Vista.
The same with the HP recovery disk

You would use Vista drivers to update if you have a driver missing or giving you a problem.
Otherwise use the drivers given by the Win7 installer which are kept updated via optional Windows Updates.

Leave the Data Protection Sensor alone so that it parks the HD reader when you carry around the laptop.

it looks the driver is properly installed, now i am looking for the software, il try then post

Ok, sorry for the delay...

the driver it looks is not available from HP, but it is for windows updates, i dont know which windows update bring it. but the latest version is 4.2.2.1 issued on June 12 2011 (jut couple of weeks ago, i told you, im not getting crazy :p that was not there )

and i found the latest software for that device, and it is compatible with windows 7;
HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection

Downloaded from here:
HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection - HP Customer Care (United States - English)

issued 2009-09-25 Version: 4.0.3.1 A

now it's properly installed:

Good work.

It will lock the HD reader in place when not in use for safer transport.

yeap, that is a plus for peace of mind..
