Have you tried a system restore to a point before it vanished? Info here if needed: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/700-system-restore.html If that doesn't work, maybe a system repair from the disk.

Don't remove 'Search' from 'turn windows features on or off' or you will lose the search box completely 
Disable it from running in 'services' only.
