Since it has been modifed twice, it would appear it has been damaged and the reason it doesn't work.

I wholeheartedly agree!

If you have sensitive data on there then why may ask would you risk it 'snipping bits off'?

USB memory is a dime a dozen these days too

Purchase a new drive. Their is no way to know if all your "snipping" hasn't caused some kind of defect inside of the drive on it's PCB board.

well since we had the hardware me and my friend had a little advantage there.

we have now fixed it ( and added a 5mm led :D)

some sort of metal cylinder that we think was a capactior but suspected that it might not have been had gotten loose from the pcb (no were near the snipping)

the reason why we got data caught on it was because when we snipped it we backed it up the we snippe one bit of (just a wire bridge leading nowhere) then we tested and it worked fine (wire bridge meaning a long strip of pcb doing nothing other that making it longer)then we snipped of another wire brige with a smd led on and it still worked. then a month later (he used it and got new data on that we didnt back up) it just stopped worked. so, no we were not so stupid to snip in it without backing it up (it was a 2 gb pen so we didnt really care if it broke). how ever, everything is fine and functional :D and we got the data. (and reduced the size of the usb pen with 2 cm in length)

once i accidently kicked on my usb - Sandisk Cruzer Contour, it folded 90 degree. After open, make straight and soldered back, still KO, luckily with the help of microscope at work and Metcal Solder Station, able to trace a tiny broken track, after resurrection, it is now back to 100% performance.
