Kari, Baarod, you are more experienced than the rest of us and we do appreciate the help. But for many of us Windows 7 is not working in a network environment. I have followed advice here, at MajorGeeks, looked up on tech net and still cannot get Windows 7 to work like XP did for file sharing. I assume when you first tried out Win7 you set it up to share with your other OS's and after a month or so made the decision it works. Same as I would do.

Ask what you need to know and I will post it.

Logically I should be able to get a full map from the networking and Sharing window and set things up. Instead I have this computer, the switch and the gateway connected to the internet and a list of computers below under "the following device(s) can not be placed on the map". This is true on both Win7 computers. The XP computers show all devices correctly. So the Win7 computers can see the devices but not place them nor give any information but the XP computers can. All help appreciated.

I should add I am file sharing effectively by typing in the IP or the name directly to the "search and command line" box in the start menu.

What is a reasonable test period at home before 'putting all eggs in the same basket', as you say? I've used Win7 almost a year and a half now on two computers, about a year when I finally decided to install it on all rigs at home.

At work, the network has a Vista rig, two XP's, a Mandriva Linux and some Sevens. Absolutely no problems to setup and maintain. We have successfully set up computers with Seven to customer's networks using different OS's.

I still fail to understand how I am out of touch with reality.

If you have some problems, it's only your reality. When experienced users don't have problems, I wouldn't call it to be out of touch with reality.

Don't feel bad. I got slammed earlier. The best idea is just stop helping. We could modify W7 P2P and Homegroup to each other from here to Europe and I don't think it would make a difference. The OP has a bone to pick with W7 or MS and we can't help these folks!

I haven't had any issues networking my 7 and XP boxes but then again I do not use Homegroups. I also don't have any issues with latency at home so I can't see how anyone can blame the OS for the root issue.

I did have a problem with homegroup getting it to see my XP machine. That is before I knew that homegroup was for Win 7 machines. With Chev's help and the help of several others, I got it to work and I have had no problems since. That was not a fault of Win 7; homegroup did exactly what it was designed to do. I could have used a work group and saved myself some trouble.
