I Want to Keep Windows 7 Forever

I Dislike Windows 10, I tried an insider on that but they do not listen. Candy crush Saga E.G, Spyware extreme and updates adjusting my other Devices. Windows 7 is the Best pretty looking light and works UEFI no Worries

It's been explained already. Go back and read the past couple of pages or so of posts.

Back on topic: Keeping Windows 7 for the long run.

I'm faced with maintaining W7 for my dad's old computer. He only looks at the internet and then not often. Changing the OS for him is probably not an option, neither is running W7 in a virtual box or in a sandbox. So I will harden W7 as much as I can. I'm sure he can keep using it for years to come, I mean people are still using XP today.

So...outside of needing to replace hardware in the future that might not be compatible with W7...just how long can W7 keep going?

The reason for better protection

The reason for getting protection is if you like windows 7. The firewall will not be updated or security. Go to Win 10 you still giving data away. Especially buying on line. Microsoft seems to be enabling everything after each update on windows 10, one device updates the other seems to theme change hahaha. Mind you I saw a video on Youtube one posting a test on antivirus the free ones and Win 98 beat xp:D:D

I have same situation. I look after my neighbors Dell. It has Windows 7 home. He is 93 and used to the computer the way it is. I did install Malwarebytes premium back when we could get a lifetime Premium licence. Other than that, I do complete backups from time to time so hopefully we could get him back running if he gets infected. Not sure how long this will last. 5-7 years should be enough! He is a hardy old guy.

Agreed. I think you'll find that most who object to Win 10 data collection don't do Social Media.

There are things we can do to keep some of our privacy. Google isn't inevitable.
I use no Google products and no social media.
I have Malwarebytes Browser Guard eliminating trackers and
Ublock Origin blocking ads. Haven't seen an ad in many years.
Don't have a smart-phone.
I don't give out my address and phone # to stores to get those little plastic "loyalty" cards.

You do what what you can.

People who go on social media and then complain about their privacy... Grrrr

ETA-I just looked back and Lady Fitzgerald posted almost the same thing.
Actually this thread is similar to "https://www.sevenforums.com/general-discussion/419270-what-should-we-do-after-january-2020-a-25.html"

Thursday night I had the monthly meeting of my PC Users Group. Our current president is in IT. He doesn't see anything wrong with 10. I mentioned that I'm staying with Win7, and was sorry after. It's like publicly admitting that you never wash your socks. Now I'm on his s--- list, and most of the club thinks I'm nutso, with the exception of advanced users who really know what's going on.

OTOH, we've always had a monthly workshop in the current OS, under previous presidents, and I've been a member for 23 years. 10 "has issues" so I suggested there should be a workshop in Win10, he said there's no room on our schedule.

... Don't have a smart-phone.

I don't give out my address and phone # to stores to get those little plastic "loyalty" cards. ...

I also don't have a "smart phone". My cell phone is a dumb as rocks phone that stays turned off except when I'm going to use it, which is rarely. I also have voice mail disabled so phone spammers/scammers won't run up the bill on my pay as you go plan. I also had texting disabled but has to turn it back on for my new idiot credit union.

I get the loyalty cards so I can get the discounts and coupons but I use a phony phone number (the same one all the time) so I won't get phone spammed as much. I'm very stingy with my phone numbers.

My mailing/shipping address is a UPS mail box. I almost never give out my home address.

I know. We discussed this in the other thread.
An elderly friend today was complaining about the amount of junk mail she gets in her (physical) mail box, and I told her about address lists being sold. But that was already going on pre-PC-computer. Now it's spread to phones.
I get close to zero junk mail in my physical mailbox.

But I've moved away from our topic. My point is that instead of throwing up your hands and saying "Well, we have no privacy, anyway," you do what you can.

How to run Win 10 and take back your "PC" (Personal Computer).

A) YouTube search on how to customize the OS disk to strip out the crap like Cortana, etc.

B) Use one of these programs to help mitigate telemetry and crap.

C) Go to eBay and find a nice used Nettop with at least 4 GB of RAM and install the Pfsense firewall. Now go here and enter the search term Microsoft and copy all those ASNs (Tip: press and hold control as you scroll down the list of ASNs. Right click, copy. BAM!). Add those ASNs to the Pfsense firewall and block on outbound connections.

D) Get a plunder bug from here or maybe used on eBay. Throw it inline between your computer and the router or modem (which ever may be the case), connect the USB to your PC and use Wireshark to monitor anything going in/out that shouldn't be. Add its ASN/s as well to the firewall. Don't block an ASN you shouldn't!

Note, I have yet to do all this, but this is my plan once I go Win 10. My computer is MY COMPUTER and I'll be damned if I'll be a Redmond Muppet on strings to help with their cash flow.

Plunder bug "this smart network sniffer enables passive recording or active scanning." What does that mean? What am I scanning and recording?

What's a Nettop?
What's ASN?

No way, not worth all that bother. I'll keep Win7 as long as possible.

Ain't that the truth... no, fact!

I've been feeling alienated since he took over the club. I'm using old computers with an old system, and I have no smart-phone or Tablet, so the club has been becoming irrelevant lately, except to say hello to some friends. And it gets me out of the house.
But I've been getting all my support from the web for a long time, not the club.

There are a lot of people in IT that don't know their backsides from a hole in the ground.

How many others do?

The only guy I know that could claim to know that did his science degree in Geology, but then switched and completed second degree in Anatomy.

I'm sorry, man. If I don't sound coherent and you have no idea what I'm talking about then this project isn't for you. But if you do really want to learn, then you have the world's knowledge under your finger tips with Google. Just Google ASN, etc on what I wrote about and learn. It's not hard to understand at all.
