I Want to Keep Windows 7 Forever

As MSE is still in use for those paying for updates the definitions will still be updated, I'm not sure if, as MSE can be seen as a separate application from windows 7, these will continue to be supplied to those without a support contract or not.

I would suggest that until this is known officially, that you source a reliable anti Malware solution, to protect yourself, it may be a good thing anyway as the base design of the MSE engine is getting quite old and the attack nature has changed

There may be an increase in malware attacks on Windows 7 now that support has ended, I hope not but we all know what these malware scum are like

Guys don't lose hope.

China just released UOS today (a Linux OS based on Deepin with UI that looks eerily similar to Win7) intended to completely replace Windows in the Chinese market. UOS (Unified/Unity OS) is basically a commercial version akin to Win 7 Pro/Ultimate was released today. The Home Premium version/Windows S version/aka community edition is called Deepin Linux version will b available in March. Since UOS is backed by a commercial entity while Deepin is just the I don't care freebie version, we're moving into a world where Windows nor Mac OS r the only commercial choices available to consumers.

This is actually good news for users with aversion to Win10 telemetry. Imagine doing this, buying a new modern PC and then doing the following:

1. Keep Windows 10 permanently offline.
2. Install Ubuntu/Mint/UOS/Deepin to a second partition.
3. Run a Windows 7 virtual machine in #2 so u can continue to use it indefinitely.

I'd rather eat a snake sandwich than trust a Chinese made OS. Bad enough they hack the crap out of everything, steal intellectual property and made server MOBOs with chips on them to steal data. That was in the news some two years ago and I think it was Dell that had to get rid of all that crap. God only knows how many government servers had those mother boards and how much data China siphoned off.

Malwarebytes will support Windows 7 for a while until further notice as noted in their FAQ. nice alternative to MSE

as most support for Win7 has ended on 1/14/2020, only new signature/definition updates for MSE will continue as noted in MS support article 4527878. Program or app software updates for MSE will not continue on after 1/14/2020.

Will Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) continue to protect my computer after the end of support? Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) will continue to receive signature updates after January 14, 2020. However, the MSE platform will no longer be updated. Learn more about MSE.

Just got some new Windows updates today, some for Office, some for Windows 7. Whether or not this is the last batch of updates I can't tell and honestly I don't care. Of course, I can't buy a new laptop with Windows 7 on it, but this one works and there is absolutely no need to change anything on it.

There was a batch of updates issued on the last day of Windows 7 support, as always these will arrive at different times to different users,The Patch Tuesday was Always a Patch Wednesday for me here in the UK ;)

The next Patch Tuesday will not see any further updates for windows 7 (except for major corporations that have Volume licencing in place and a suitable support contract in place at extra cost )

Edit

Office 2010 also reaches EOL this year but not for several months so will continue to be patched if needed

Been awhile since i was on this thread and wow! Been playing around with Linux a bunch and it mostly solves all my issues. Linux mint to be exact. I nearly have it looking just like windows 7. Been digging a lot and just haven't found anything that fully converts it the way i remember 7 as. Close tho. Just need to get a few buttons correct and only a few icons and i will have a non spying operating system up to date and look like the old windows 7 i miss. Only miss so much as it is driving me nuts at the same time with some issues. So for the ones that are in fear of issues with a out dated windows 7 and fear of the virus, malware/keylogger windows 10 there is another way. You can still run a windows version in a Virtual machine or if you have a real power hungry program to run you can always use a 2nd hard drive. One used daily Linux and another for them windows only things you must have that need all your hardware has to offer. If there is a will there is a way i have found. Or just a 2nd computer. Plenty of different ways to avoid windows 10 and be more private then ever. Even if you have to give up some info due to needing to use a windows 10 you only have to give the bare bones for said program. Depending on the program you could be using windows 7 for just that one. I for one can only find 2 things Linux can't do i need windows for and them 2 i can do in a virtual machine or have a spare drive which i am working on now. Lucky me them 2 things are only once or twice a year thing. Eventually i may find something native to Linux that will do it.

Something about "tinfoil hats" back there? It is funny people who claim others have a tin foil hat and claim they only believe facts are the same ones when shown facts disbelieve them. Who really has the tinfoil hat? Sure you may not have seen any issues with windows having all of your personal information so everyone else is just crazy for fearing it. Then like most fears some of them do come true. It has happened time and time again. Someone makes a claim others say he has a tinfoil hat years later it is found the guy was right. Maybe not every time but the simple fact is it does happen and happens a lot. This leads me to a few questions.

1 if you like windows 10 or you like windows 10 and are fine with them collecting your data why are you on a thread talking about keeping windows 7 on a windows 7 forum?

2 If you are fine with them collecting your data or anyone collecting your data why do you worry about security on your computer at all? Why not shut off all of your security? Anyone at Microsoft can find your information someone could hack in and get it or everyone they distribute your information to can do whatever they want to. Laws don't physically stop a person. Only takes 1 upset employee.

3 If you are ok with your personal data going to people you don't know why haven't i got a copy? Why not every member of this forum have it? At least us you know are forum name do you know any name of a employee at Microsoft?

Something about you can't use social media if you want privacy? Wait who has been around the internet so little they forgot to never put personal info on things like social media? That use to be a rule to play by! Forums have screen names for a reason! You just do the same. Sure most of them try to force you to put your real info on there but there are ways around it. Ohh but your email right? I have never had a email with my real name. You can still get prepaid phones with no names. I know i have one. Even my email for my bank has all false info. They know it as i told them.

In the end everyone has a point in which privacy is important to them. I don't see anyone freely sharing there bank info anywhere and i sure don't see people removing the blinds off there windows while leaving the lights on so everyone can see everything they do all day and night. If no one fights for there privacy now eventually the privacy wall will be at your discomfort zone. It may not affect you now but eventually it will if no one speaks up! I wonder how them who call others crazy with tinfoil hats would like all of us being able to see him/her any time we wanted just by clicking a button! Oh still not worried? Please send us a link to the 24hr webcam that shows your every move and everything you see with no interruptions! Until then privacy is important to everyone!

I had installed whatever the last updates were a couple of days ago.

As one keeping Windows 7 for simple, basic usage, MSE is still functional, still says my PC is protected, with virus and spyware definitions created this morning, and definitions updated in the afternoon. So, what exactly does it mean, that spyware/virus definitions will be updated? Is that a good thing and helpful? :p I've never had any major issues with my computer and MSE- once, I had another anti-virus program installed on the computer, and even though I didn't run it, it slowed down the system. Once I removed that one and just used MSE, the computer's run relatively smoothly.

That support article says the 'MSE platform will no longer be updated'. The 'platform' means to the GUI, the user interface. The bits of of MSE that do the actual work are the scan engine and the definitions updates. Both of those will continue to be updated until 2023.

Microsoft said:
Microsoft will continue to release signature updates (including engine) to service systems currently running Microsoft Security Essentials until 2023.

Helo!

Want to stay with W7 then the answer is simple just stay with it! You can get a little crazy with this like me - im using W7 with ryzen build from almost 3years and everyting is flawless. I have turned off Windows updates long time ago. Yes you CAN be safe withtout those updates just use your PC with brain - read on internet about safe using your PC if u are green.
I also buy some PC parts like ryzen processors/motherboards (with W7 drivers available)/GPU and RAMs just to be safe and be able to put couple of machines when the one I use die after some years... Just want to be covered for next +15-25 years.

Yes, most people will tell its crazy and it is a little but I have no other choice. My reasons to stay for W7 forever are partially the micosoft shit which is included in W10 and the way they force people to use it.
BUT the main reason is different and might be the one you never heard of.... I have tried it once but im in those group of people being affected with the new 4k displays/new drivers/new consoles etc. I just can't use those without eye strain/headache. Same was with W10.

Not sure how good they [flip-phones] are, but research Blackphone and check out a burner phone App if you do use a smartphone. I use TextNow. I do this to segregate who gets my real phone number and who doesn't to control the possible spam.

They make and receive phone calls, all I need. I have no need to text, and I bought a refurb GPS for the car.

Any Open Source project is capable of being scrutinized and looked over (that is one of the points of Open Source!). If it contained malicious software/backdoors, anything of that nature it would become public knowledge very quickly and be 'the end' of the project.

Proprietary software on the other hand is completely open to being abused and bunged full of backdoors etc. It's why Windows 10 is what it is (a spyware tool).

I use Waterfox, an unofficial branch of Firefox, and for online work I've changed my user agent to Firefox 59, because the sites I use require Chrome or Firefox.

Is it similarly possible to disguise Win7 as Win 10?
And can someone on another site actually see I'm using 7?

I have the Custom User Agent String extension in my Waterfox. Can I just change it to this?
