Solved I want to make my D drive the boot/operating system drive

I have an SSD that I want to install my operating system on, and make it the boot drive. The reason being that some software will default to install on the C drive automatically, without prompting for another option, so I want to use just a regular hard drive for data and some programs, and I want this to be the C drive. Boot from the D drive, which will be the SSD.

Does this make sense? How do I go about this? Thanks!

If you install windows 7 to the ssd in the normal way, using booted media e.g. the dvd , it will assign itself letter C.

It is possible to assign a different letter during boot media install - but it's complicated.


If you already have windows 7 installed on the HD ( I assume it has already itself C ) - running setup from there and pointing it at the SSD will cause the installer to use the next available letter.

That will be much easier for you.

I have a program called acronis disk director. Very good! You can merge, split discs and lot more. You can also write which disc is main.

I am trying to do the same thing. What do you mean by running setup? I should boot normally to windows 7 on c drive which is the normal hdd and then run the windows installation disk and install to sdd which would be d drive? If I then format c drive will it remain c or will my sdd be renamed to c since it will be the only drive with an os?

When you run Win7 installer from another OS, it will take the next available letter.

When you boot Win7 installer to install, it will always see itself as C even if another partition has claimed C - while in Win7 the other OS partition will have another letter and vice-versa.

thanks guys. I was able to get windows on d drive. Turns out that it dont matter which drive your os is on, programs will always default to the drive which your os is on.

In that case, I would reinstall by booting the installer so that you are universally in C.

But this is up to user preference, since there is rarely an issue with Win7 on another letter.

OS back in C drive. Now I want my user profile on D.


Here is what I did. After installing windows 7 I simply changed the profiles directory in the registry to D:\Users instead of C and then created my primary user profile and deleted the dummy profile on c created after install. Is there any reason this method wouldnt work? Any Conflicts wtih having app data etc stored on d instead of c? So far it seems to work fine
