I am looking at buying a Re-furbed IBM T42 lappy with P4m 1.7, 1 gig of ram and 40 gb (I know...its small) hdd to generally play around with and to run some Powerpoint Presentations for customer when I need to.

It comes with XP SP3 but I am so hooked on Win 7 that would be my preference....

It should install without too many dramas but I was hoping someone out there might have some experience with similar spec machines regarding drivers etc.

I was going to go for a 10 inch netbook but at A$280 for the IBM and I know where they came from initially it is hard to justify A$650 plus for a smaller rig.

All comments (nice ones) welcomed.

I'm running on a T43 (1.86 Ghz CPU) with 1.5 GB of Ram and 60 GB disk. Win 7 runs fine!!!

As always, more memory will always be a better experience. I think the max for these Thinkpads is 2 Gig. I am trying a ReadyBoost USB stick but am not sure it is really of much good in improving performance.

I don't know what the exchange rate is but the price you quoted for the T42 seems high for an older single core, slow disk, slow GPU laptop.

I'm pretty happy with my setup but if I had to spend my money, I'd chose to invest it for the future and buy a current dual core machine with much better specs.

Thanks for the info.
As far as Ram goes...yep max of 2 gig and I would most likely up it to that....if I go that way.
In terms of Exchange rates it would be equivalent to US$200 or thereabouts. Unfortunately here in Aus re-furbished Laptops pull higher values than in some other places...there just aren't too many around.
I will have to have a good look at some of the netbooks and late model 2nd hand laptops I think.

It is nice to know though if I do go the T42 that I can use Win 7.....thanks for that.
