ICON Problem

The ICONS on my desktop and in my files are corrupted. I can still open all the files and applications without any problems. However, the icons show only a rectangle with 6 Windows type symbols in the rectangle. The corrupted icons are MsWindows, pdf files and some applications. I would like to restor the icons without reinstalling windows. Does anybody have any suggestions?

You should be able to change the icons, but you'll have to do them one by one, and you may not be able to restore every one of them to the original icon. In other words, restoring the new 'generic' icon to a particular image (icon) that you select, may not 'take' --- and you'll just have to choose another image (icon) instead. Here's how:

How to Change the Windows 7 ‘Default Folder’ Icon

On the Desktop, right-click the folder or file whose icon you wish to change, right-click on Properties, and then select Change Icon. When the new window opens up, you can either select from the icon choices given OR, even better, click the Browse button, which takes you to the C drive\Windows, and in the right-side column, there's a very, very long list of files/folders to choose from. Go to any one of the icon folders and select any one of the many, many icon choices offered. Here's a list of my favorite icon folders, (and I think imageres.dll and Shell32.dll have the largest selection):

You can experiment to your heart's delight. If you don't like your choice, try selecting another one, or two, or as many as you like, until you find one you like. You can do this for your Desktop icons, and the same icon should also appear in your Quick Launch toolbar (if you have one) and Windows Explorer.

You need to go to this path in your pc: C:\Users\username\AppData\Local and then look for the file IconCache.db
Delete it and reboot your pc, it automatically restores the file again with fresh icons
