Icons move on restart

Hi.

I've come across an issue where when I shut down and restart my PC on occasion all of my desktop icons will have moved.

I am running a dual screen set up, screen 1 on the left, screen 2 on the right using screen 2 as the main display, running Win 7 Pro x64.
Windows gadgets are unaffected by this problem, only icons which are all moved onto the main display and largely jumbled up.

This doesn't happen every time I shut down. I am beginning to suspect it has something to do with the order of programs closing before windows shuts down, but I am not sure, and even less sure why programs which have no affect on the resolution would have any affect on the icon position.

Has anyone got any suggestions as to why Windows might be getting confused sometimes?

You might give DeskTopOK a try. Not sure what it will do in a dual screen environment, but I use it to keep Desktop icons exactly where I place them on my single screen setup (Win 7 Pro X64).

I've looked into 3rd party apps/programs to keep icon positions before (previous operating systems where going between single and dual monitors and varying resolutions was an issue) and never found any that worked as expected, strange things with new icons when not logged with the program correctly or even some which have become confused in their own programming.

I'll give it a try, but really don't think it should be needed. For the most part the icons stay put, its only an occasional glitch which I'm trying to find the cause of and a fix for.

I've found that this problem seems to be linked to the method of shut down.

If I click Start -> Shut Down
Everything is happy when I turn my PC on next.

If I press the power button on my case (which is set to shut down the PC) it looses my icon position.

Any ideas (other than 3rd party software or always going through the menu)?

Does Windows shut down properly when you press the power button? Or does it just turn off?

I have tested Display Fusion and it seems pretty nice for dual monitor setup. I saw it used in a PC World issue several months back I think.

Windows shuts down properly as far as I can tell. All programs exit and it goes through the normal process, it just seems to miss the "remember icon locations" bit...

I believe certain things do not happen when you push the power button. This is to shutdown the pc now, it just closes all open apps and shuts down the pc, hence not saving certain things and not being nice about it either. When you choose shutdown from the startmenu it is not a 'shut down now' situation and is much more graceful on what it shuts down and in what order, it will also wait for things to save and even prompt if you have something open that needs saving.

This was a good question and if I am wrong would love to know it, I use a shortcut to shut down my computer "C:\Windows\System32\shutdown.exe /s /t 0" and I do not see the isues you describe, yes I have a dual monitor setup but I do use monitor 1( one on left) as my main monitor.
