reinstall Windows but on restart no boot found

Hi all,

I recently reinstalled Windows 7 after a virus, but I think during the re-install I must have messed with the partitions. Now it installs fine but when I switch the laptop off and reboot it doesn't recognize or run Windows, unless I plug the usb back in and install from there. Once installed it runs fine, but as soon as you shutdown it won't restart.

I have tried cleaning disk and clearing partitions and the only thing I can think it is, is that it always wants to put the system reserved space and therefore the boot drive on disk 1, I can't seem to change this even after trying. Does this sound like the issue or am I clutching at straws?

Beware, you're going do clean all the HDD.
- Boot your Win 7 installation on UEFI mode, go to install, custom, advanced, delete all partitions, create a new one (Win will create 3 partitions) and proceed.

Thanks but I have tried clean install, everything works fine but then there is an issue in the boot up, I have tried doing all the usual fixes for boot issues and Windows cannot resolve it. Any other way to resolve boot issues?

I'm sure the underlying problem is that disk 0 is the primary disk and it's only 22GB. Is there any way to make disk 0 into disk 1 and visa versa? So the system reserved space will only create on disk 0 and so when I install Windows on disk 1 it doesn't look for it. Arghh it's driving me crazy, thanks for your help everyone!

Please see attached, you can see that disk 0 has 22.7gb and is a small drive, I think this should be disk 1 but cannot change them and think this is causing boot issues.

I believe it would more straight forward to start over
This time only have 1 disk connected that you were installing windows on

Otherwise if you want to try
Disconnect disk 1 which is pretty much empty anyway and use easyBDC to copy the boot loader from disk 0 to disk 2

Hi, but disk 2 is just my usb with win7 on. I'm really confused how they got the wrong way round (disk 0 and disk 1) as its a laptop that was working fine before. Ideally I would prefer not to disassemble it as I'm not comfortable working with laptops under the cover. So any solution that works without opening it up would be preferred.

Not sure why you had 2 little devices connected installing windows in the first place.

1-Installation media
2-Disk to install windows on.
That is all.

The small drive is probably a SSD to increase the system performance.
It can be used to host part of the OS or as a cache drive.
As it is a laptop, don't you have the factory recover disks?
Please give us the brand and model of your laptop.

Yes thats correct. There are 2 physical SSDs, the other drive is the USB Windows & Installation. The problem is the small SSD is somehow the primary Disk 0, and unless i install windows on here (which i cant as its too small) it doesnt boot and find anything because its on disk 1. The laptop is Samsung Series 5 Ultrabook. I will add the model number in a few hours when home.

I dont have any original boot disks im afraid.

Are you trying to install Win 7 on a laptop that came with Win8? If so, did you disabled secure boot on BIOS?
I've seen on a Samsung NP540U3C specs that it has with 24GB ExpressCache.
As the Samsung has installed the OS using some tricks, I would call Samsung and ask for the factory recover disks.

No it's a Windows 7 laptop, and I had reinstalled Windows 7 around 6 months ago and was all ok then, so somehow I must have done something on the first attempt this time that messed the drives around

Have you took a deep look at your BIOS options? For Win 7 secure boot must be disable and CSM set to EFI.
Can it be that the boot loader is being installed on a kind of ramdisk so when you shut it down it vanish?
