Icons off the screen in 7057

I've upgraded to 7057 64 bit, and having a bit of an oddity pop up: My icons are off the screen in the upper left corner. I've got the most recent drivers (ATI Radeon 4850) and have played with the screen resolution. No matter what I set it to (1240x480 in this case) the icon grid goes off the screen, but that's the ONLY thing. (windows maximize correctly, etc.).

Any ideas?

That usually has to do with changing resolutions or drivers. You might try different drivers for your 4850.

May be a daft comment, but has your monitor got an AUTO or similar that you can press? Mine has, so whenever I get anything like that happen, one quick press of that and the screen corrects itself! Mind you, it's been a while since I've had to do that.

Just a thought.

Thanks for the suggestions!

It's even wierder than I originally thought. I was able to "select all" and drag all my icons down, which resulted in them disappearing about half way down the screen. It's as if the boundaries for the icons are completely different than the boundaries of the desktop (and everything else).

I didn't change the drivers to start with (just upgraded from 7048 to 7057), but after this oddity presented itself, I installed the latest Vista drivers for the card.

I have got the exact same issue. I have a NVIDIA GTX 260 Core 216 and I experience the same issue as described by the topic creator.

I have two screens, one 1360x768 on the left and the other (my primary) 1280x1024 on the right. All my icons appear on the left screen and my attempts to move them over by drag and drop fail.

Trying to drag my mouse over the entire desktop reveals something very strange. The blue "select box" will visually stop although the mouse will keep going as it approaches the right edge my my 1360x768 left screen. It does seem that the desktop "icon area" is different than the desktop area in total.

Everything else seems to work, I can right click anywhere on the desktop, and move windows to either screen without issue.

Windows 7 build 7057 x64.

I have also tried both the Windows 7 NVIDIA drivers and the Windows Vista drivers without success.

to confirm, I am experiencing the same thing. Four quick questions for everyone to possibly nail it down. Is/does anyone A) using ultramon? B) using kaspersky 8.0.0.1015 C) feel that it WASNT having this problem at some point after install and it changed?, and D) did anyone disable any windows features?

I don't know why it would have anything to do with B, but I put that because it is a variable that recently changed, and for some reason, i feel like it WASN'T always this way after install. If anyone else feels that way, I would appreciate a reply.

and just to confirm, i too am experiencing the noted oddity with the blue selection box. it breaks off at where the bottom of the 2ndary monitor is. if you change the position of the 2ndary monitor to level with the primary, the problem disappears. that is the oddest part about it. it is clearly looking for the positioning of the 2ndary monitor to inform the icon space for the primary. if anyone can also confirm that a workaround is to set both monitors virtually "level", that would be helpful. by virtually level, i mean an offset position of 0 vertically, in case that was unclear. not necessarily level by the visual position in the settings.

I have the same problem. Playing with the layout of the screens changes the behaviour, but doesn't really provide a decent solution.

I can confirm it happens on a fresh install of 7057 x64 without Ultramon, and with both the inbuilt drivers and the latest Nvidia ones. I'm running a 4 screen setup, and the usable area appears to be dictated by the smallest screen.

You are all having the same problems that I am having. I run 3 monitors, all different, 2 stacked and the main on the left.
At the beginning (install), all monitors are in Horizontal lineup, when trying to configure them my system takes 5 to 6 minutes in blackout then the icons are off screen. So far I have found no way to get them back on the main monitor, yet. I have been examining the desktop.ini files to see if the part (IconResource=%SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll,-183) might be an issue. If any one is running an earlier version can you go to your desktop folder, open the desktop.ini file and copy it and post it.

The common thread here seems to be multiple monitors. I do not have any of the conditions lordloki described. I have two installations, one is a 64 bit installation that is a continual upgrade from Vista (Vista --> 7 beta 7000 --> build 7022 --> 7048 --> 7057) and the other is a fresh installation of 7057 32 bit. Both of them doing exactly the same thing all of us are experiencing.

I wonder this: Do all of us have multiple monitors with multiple resolutions? Perhaps a vertical resolution setting on one monitor is somehow influencing the other monitor, but only for icon placement? Follow me here, my secondary monitor is 1680x1050, but my primary monitor is 1024x768. Is it possible that the boundaries for the icons on my primary monitor is vertically set at 1680 (or something like that)? Just a shot in the dark, but something worth playing with. THis is obviously a bug of some sort.

My video card is an ATI 4850, so it's evidently not card specific, either.

yeah, i didnt think that anything other than ultramon might've been influencing, nothing else made sense. and my resolutions are 1440x900 (primary), 1280x1024 (secondary). i am 100% sure what the error is, but that doesnt mean i have a damn clue how to fix it. the icon space is starting on the primary monitor by taking the bottom as the position of the secondary monitor. if you have a 0 vertical offset with equal resolutions, you should not see an issue. I for instance have my 2ndary set at 560 pix "above" my primary, which is the point where my icon space starts on my primary. if i set it to zero, it brings the icons back down.

whether it is also taking the vertical resolution of the icon space from the secondary, i cannot confirm, because my vertical res on main monitor is smaller.

It is definitely a bug. The only thing that I have been able to do to rectify the problem is to drag the tops of the monitors level in display settings. Although I would prefer my screens lined up on the bottom, lining them up at the top resolves the issue.

That didn't work for me.
Did exactly what you said, but as soon as extended my desktop (after reboot) the same problem returned. :(

Same with desktop.ini popping up. :S

Just position the tops of the two monitors level in control panel and it'll resolve the issue until we get a fix.

Sorry, but I don't understand what you mean? Can you explain yourself a bit better?

Right click on your desktop and select "screen resolution". Drag the No1 monitor such that the top of it is at the same height of the No2 monitor and click Apply.

Ah okay... Well I tried it, seemed to work, however my resolution went back to 85 Hz, so I did changed it back to 100Hz and made my 2nd monitor primary once again and the same problem returned.

Guess I am stuck using the secondary (left) monitor as my 'icon-monitor', oh well.

Thanks for explaining though.

Well I can tell you what i did to fix it for me.
Before I changed the Resolution or any thing at the monitor Settings. I right click on the Main monitor and unchecked the "Align to Grid" settings, then grabbed all the Icons on my desktop and moved them to the center of that monitor.

Then went to the "Resolution" settings and repositioned the monitors the way I need them (My main was not # 1, and on the wrong side), after the system (Desktop Windows Manager) came back to life, which took almost 3 minutes of "Black Screens", then I selected My "Main Monitor" and clicked Apply, when that finished, then I moved the Icons where I wanted them and rechecked the "Align to Grid". and It worked,(just for 2 monitors).
