I have a fully updated, legal copy of windows 7. It has IE 8, and was installed off of retail CD. It is 64 bit.

The Internet Explorer I'm trying to install is named "IE11-Windows6.1-x64-en-us" and gives me a "Operating system not supported error upon installation.

27 runs of SFC \scannow all give no errors despite multiple threads telling people to do that. Running the repair tool off the CD comes up clean as well.

This is not an embedded windows installation, and my current IE has been reset to default settings. Malwarebytes, and Hitmanpro both come up clean as does windows defender.

Help is appreciated as I cannot find a reason on the internet for this to not work. Microsoft's website has no further help. Troubleshooter has no help, and I can find no further leads on google.

Yep those updates make a repair install not possible
I'd ask why and or what did you do to need to reinstall ie :/

Repair install needs and repair disk created after installing all updates to be applicable as far as I understand it :(

I never had IE 11, my windows install -- from the cd -- came with IE 8. I was simply trying to update it.

The computer works fine. There is no visible reason to repair anything besides that IE 10 and 11 refuse to recognize my version of windows.

I have tried using this diagnostic tool:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/gp/windows-update-issues/en-us

I will report back if this fixes it.

The above dianostic tool found a corrupt registry entry that appears to have been the culprit. Once fixed my windows no longer was updated properly and "service pack 1" was no longer in the update history.

Upon re-downloading the update, the problem resolved itself. It appears that my windows update got corrupted after the first round of updates, but either before or during the service pack update. Leading to it falsely claiming to have installed updates that were not fully or correctly installed.

Anyways, problem solved.
