IE: How Get Prompt For Download Location?

On Internet Explorer, versions 8 and 9, how can one select to be prompted for the location to save each download?

I want to be able to select the location to save each download individually, and to be able to select whatever location I prefer for that particular download at that time.

I do not want all downloads going to a single default location.

As far as I know, you'll have to click on the arrow next to Save > Save as > choose your destination.

I use Firefox and don't have to worry about that.

Have you tried simply blanking out the default location?

In IE, type Ctrl-J, select Options in the lower left corner...

All I do is select Save As from the drop-down menu at the bottom of the screen and point the download to where I want it saved - typically a download folder on my data backup partition so that it's safe and sound if I need it again.

Where and when does this option to Save appear? I haven't seen it. I usually use Firefox, but for some things IE may be better or required.

Hi sibble. No I haven't tried to blank out the default location. Where would I go to blank that out?
Where in the lower left corner of IE would I type Ctrl-J? I don't see a place to enter text in the lower left corner of the IE window. (I am currently using IE8. I will be upgrading to IE9 very soon.)

All I do is select Save As from the drop-down menu at the bottom of the screen and point the download to where I want it saved
How do I get this Save As option to appear? I am not getting that.

I'm just saying to enter the keystroke while you've got IE open, it's like a hotkey shortcut that performs an action rather than typing that text into a space for text.

I use IE9, but if I remember correctly, it was the same shortcut action in IE8. If not, briefly press the Alt key to display the standard menu bar, select Tools, then select View Downloads.

Initially you should see a "Save" at the bottom of the screen, and if you look closely you should see a little down arrow right next to it, so you would select the down arrow rather than "Save" and it'll give you the option.

See this screenshot below.

Whenever you click a file download button, this window should appear at the bottom of your screen.

Just click the arrow I've indicated and choose Save As, and then point the download to a location of your choice.

If you click Save it should default to the Windows Download folder and if you click Run it will just download and install the file.
