i've been having weird network issues for a few weeks now, and have not been able to find a common thread to unite the problems.

well today i did - it's IE. it won't connect. i have windows firewall turned off, and have disabled NOD32, but IE does not connect. all apps that rely on it don't connect either. i'm having problems with my sidebar gadgets, with MediaMan, and with iTunes.

but i'm obviously on the internet right now, using firefox and all is well!

:sarc: what to do?

Have you checked offline mode of IE?

Its here: While IE is open press Alt+F and see whether Work offline is checked.

If its not checked and you still have problem, why not run the diagnostic that IE offers to run when you can't connect to any website using IE?

Post back with results!

Hope this helps!

thanks for the reply!

offline mode is not checked. also, i have run the diagnostic twice, but nothing changes.

i started having a problem with widgets connecting a few weeks ago. i never use IE so i didn't realize that was part of the problem. but now that i'm having issues with other programs, i'm really stumped. i assume these other apps use IE to communicate with the internet?

I'm having similar problems and I usually have to restart the router to get internet connection back. I think it has something to do with Homegroups. Are you on a homegroup or did you do something on/with homegroup just before the problem started?

Please try resetting IE to defaults.
You can do this in IE by going to Tools>Internet Options or Control Panel>Internet Options
Go to Advanced tab, under Reset Internet Explorer settings and click on Reset.

That should sort our your IE problems.

I'd restart as well just to make sure.

Please let us know how it turns out ;)

i solved it!

went to control panel - internet options - connections tab - LAN settings
then unchecked automatically detect settings.

suddenly IE works. my sidebar gadgets, which have not been able to connect for several weeks, are now working again. and the few 3rd party apps i was having trouble with are now fine as well. what a relief!

hmmm.... garbanzo.... even tho THAT fixed it... THAT shouldnt have been the "fixer" imo.... shouldnt have just affected IE and not anything else.... are you using static or dhcp?

secondly, my fix for you would have been to run sfc. I had a similar problem yesterday after a reboot... the debugger wanted to constantly startup and debug IE... CONSTANTLY... never seen this message before or since now after a SFC... shoulda snapped a few shots of it, but i was ticked about it right after a clean install.... could have been something i have installed, but have yet to suss it out yet. SFC fixed it in no time tho. Whether auto detect is on or off shouldnt have affected anything unless you have other type of settings setup or an app setup some inet settings like somekind of proxy ware.

i did run sfc yesterday, but it was a couple of hours before i applied my 'fix'.

it's a mystery to me too, but very literally everything started working immediately after i did it. nothing else was happening at the time, it couldn't be a coincidence. especially since the problem has been going on for several weeks now...

yea, does sound very odd... I have it checked on mine, which is by install default as i havent changed anything there.... would wonder just how many ppl DONT have it checked.... reason why i raise my eyebrow at this being THE fix.... you said you had other apps that use IE.... besides gadgets running (which could have done this as well) what other apps do you use, that use IE? Have you checked their connection settings setup, if any? Since the settings would be auto-detected, this is where I would think the problem would lie.... Of course unchecking that setting would not allow the other apps to append IE settings.

Thanks garbanzo! I was getting the same problem on build 7022 and was pulling my hair out trying to debug it. Nothing appears in the event logs at all. Unsetting that fixed it straight away. Very strange.

I had the same problem ( IE won't connect, Yahoo Messenger the same, Google Earth the same... ).
The problem appeared when on my LAN was an IP conflict... After I resolved the conflict, I've reseted the router, the computer, and also the IE settings, but still the same. After long searches on the internet, I found this thread and now it works! :D

Thanks Garbanzo!

Same problem here

I've had this problem for over a month. Suddenly ie can't connect but firefox continues to work perfectly! I'm using a wireless connection.

The IE diagnostic reports that IE can't connect using HTTP HTTPS or FTP and I should check my firewall settings for these (ports 80, 443, and 21) but doesn't tell me what I should be checking for! Disabling the windows firewall has no effect either

Have you tried resting IE to default, that seems to work for some people.

Absolutely. No effect. I'd would have re-installed ie7 but having SP3 won't allow that (uninstalling ie). "Upgrading" to ie8 had no effect.

Sorry JMAC1 I don't think you are in the best place to asking these questions as this is a Windows 7 forum, maybe you can do some sort of repair install.
