IE11 Download resume

Hi guys.

I hope I'm posting in the correct section, if not please move?

I've searched this forum but nothing useful shows.

If I download a large file with IE11 (I don't want to install any download managers) is there any option to keep it downloading without having the browser open. The pop up window at the bottom sometimes disappears so you don't know if its still downloading or not, can that be shown again?

On my WinXP IE8 desktop the download box is a separate item which you can move anywhere. You can close the browser and it still downloads. I don't see anything in Internet Options.

Have you tried checking in the internet options section for something that may allow you to do that?

Select CTRL + J while in IE to view the downloads window. Then close IE.

Thanks for the CTRL + J tip pbcopter that's logged. As I've said I looked in Internet Options but I can't see anything listed.

But if you close IE is it still downloading, it does appear so?

You would think that M$ have been making IE since 1995 you would think that newer versions would have improvements but they don't.

I seem to remember IE9 on my old Vista laptop had the same download box as WinXP which was great.

If you use CTRL+J to open the downloads window, then close all other IE windows and tabs, the download is not interrupted. If you close the downloads window, the download stops, of course. Simple as that.

I tried opening the download browser CTRL+J and yes you can close IE and it carries on browsing. The only problem is if I click the Pause button to let it recover for a while when I click the Resume button is doesn't resume so you have to start the download again.

Are you specifying a folder to download too ?
What type of files are we talking about and from where email...... ?

I made a C:\Downloads folder so I know where everything is downloaded to. I can't do with clicking on C:\Users\my name\Downloads to look what's been downloaded. The files I'm trying to download are 800kb rar files.

Okay the only way I've ever downloaded a rar file is when it was in a zip folder :/
How are you downloading the files,
I would usually right click and Save Target as then direct it to the folder I wanted it to download too be it desktop......

Resuming downloads is not up to the browser, but the server the files are hosted on. If the server supports resuming downloads, you'll be able to resume the download. If not, you won't. Again, simple as that. It's not a problem in IE.

I click on the download link and Save As and the filename is correct. In the C:\Downloads it shows the filename .partial

Its the fact that these 800kb files take 5 hours to download so I wanted the resume to function.

I downloaded the first rar file on WinXP yesterday but I had to use FireFox as IE8 is to old.

How can an 800kb file take that long to download?

If that's true then it's most definitely an issue with the server you're downloading from. And again, it's not up to IE to offer you resumable downloads, but the server.

800kb taking 5 hours to download
Seems you isp/ modem/ router should be looked at closer,

Its my lousy ISP on a BTHomeHub2 which I pay top price for £34 a month.

This is my laptop on Wi-Fi.

I've used speedtest before:

I've thought of changing but its hard to find a good one without paying for a 12 month contract. Any recommendations for a UK ISP?

BT are installing fibre optic they did a survey a while ago and loads opted for this.

My brother in law is on BT and he lives in the next street and he's been on fibre optic all year. I enter my post code in the BT site and it says not available Sky and Virgin are the same.

Sorry for the delay.

The router is hard wired into my bedroom. I had a connection problem a few years ago and a BT engineer came out to check it. He checked the connection in the bedroom and the main socket in the hall which was a plugin connection with the filter. He said these plugin connection can go faulty, I asked him to hard wire it in, which he did.

He went out and checked the connection up the pole outside and that had a bad connection.

I don't have a modem its a router direct in via cable.

There are two in one models but all routers must have a modem,
Routers are for wifi signal but you can connect with a wire,
I'm saying connect to the router with a Ethernet cable if not all ready,
