I assumed a modem is the PCI card you slot into the computer which I've fitted many years ago.

The router is wired in with an Ethernet cable, the laptop is on WiFi.

Laptops have the best of both worlds,
They can also operate wired to the router
It's the best way to test speed of the router

Routers wifi go out all of the time and it has nothing to do with the laptop,
Although you can check with the laptop manufacture for wifi driver updates,

I'm saying connect to the router with a Ethernet cable to the computer,
The router should have at least three open Ethernet ports available
Your laptop should have one just for the router/ modem,
