IE8: Multiple internet explorer processes active with one browser open

Sometimes I will have 4-5 browsers open at once. I will then close all except one of them.

When I go into task manager, Processes, there will still be 4-6 "iexplorer.exe" processes open.

I don't want this. Why do they remain open after closing the browsers?

Is there a fix for this?

It’s perfectly normal to see two or more iexplore.exe processes in the Task Manager when an Internet Explorer 8 window is open. This is due to a change made in Internet Explorer 8 where the frame and tabs are split, each having their own processes. Each tab has its own process so that the rest of the tabs and the browser frame/window are not affected if a single tab process crashes. A Guy

+1. I agree with Bill. Even Google Chrome does the same.
