I'm new to the SSD arena so I have a few uestions

1. If you restore an image that came originally from a SSD you need not align the target SSD But you have to do it right.

Reflect_v5 ==> Look under Advanced Topics

2. A new install on a SSD from an installation DVD always aligns the SSD and turns the defrag off.

3. You can avoid the extra system partition for a clean install if you install into a predefined primary, active, aligned partition.

4. If you want to migrate the OS to the SSD with only 3 clicks, use this program:

I finally bought a Kingstone Fury 420GB SSD which I installed and removed my HD and partitioned then Installed Windows 7 and the software that I need.

Frankly folks I have not seen a speed increase in my PC. I did the trim dos promt thingy, disabled indexing, pre and supre fetch and also disabled defragmentation. NOt only have I just disabled these features but I stopped their services then disabled them+any unnecessary services

except when creating a Macrium Reflect hard disk image, on my HD based system it used to take 15 minutes now it takes only 5as the disk that is being imaged is an SSD partition and the destination is also an SD partition.

Have I forgotten anything? (Hopefully a magic step that will make everything faster)

It will not give you any more performance on the internet. But for booting and program fetching it should be a lot faster.

And be careful turning the defrag service completely off. Then you cannot shrink any partitions with disk management. You should turn defrag off for the SSD but not the whole service.

You can disable it. Just don't be amazed that you will then be unable to shrink a partition (even on an external disk) with Disk Management because the shrink service uses the defrag service. But if you never shrink a partition, then it is no problem. And you can always use the Partition wizard for that.

You need to be very careful when disabling system services because many do more than the documentation says. In any event leaving this service on manual (the default state) costs you nothing as it is started only when needed. Otherwise it consumes zero CPU time and zero memory.

mohab mate do disable the defrag as whs says and to speed things up a bit use this - if I haven't mentioned it before. You can lose a bit of the "bling" like transparency as I think of it but the changes are worth it.
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/11728-optimize-windows-7-a.html now it does use some registry changes and my advice is to use this to back it up before you use the tutorial not that the author has put any in that are not safe more that you hit a wrong key etc

I never shrank a partition and don't think I will so I guess the defrag service will remain disabled.
As for Macrium Reflect, as far as I understood, partition alignment is only required when cloning a whole partition.

Now I am guessing either you didn't see my ref to the Optimise tutorial or have already used it because you can slash quite a bit of time off the start / shut off times.

Now AddRam asked what the SSD was and you stated it was a Kingston Fury but a model number would be handy.

Do you have any other drives hooked up besides the ssd?
If you do what is installed on the other drives?

Unhook all other drives internal and external drives cards,and or s memory sticks ect. and see how that works.

You are the first one I know who did not see a performance improvement. Something must be wrong.

I agree there probably is a bottleneck somewhere - I have just upped my RAM for example to 16GB on the new laptop and immediately the speed has noticeable and it is only 1600MHz at that.
