I created an image file on my external USB drive. I then tried to restore the image to a new drive. Everything appeared to work, and all the files were present on the new drive, but when I booted the new drive it kept going inot startup repair. I tried all sorts of options (fixmbr, fixboot etc) to try and get it to boot but without success. I then created an image file on an internal SATA drive. The image restored and work perfectly.

Is anyone able to shed any light on why the image would not restore from my external USB drive?

As far as I can tell the bootable/active partitions are OK, in fact they must be as the image restored OK from an internal hard drive image. This does not explain why I can successfully restore the image from an internal hard drive but not an external USB hard drive. Surely the restoration process should work where ever the image file is stored. (I am using Windows 7 Ultimate 64 which has the ability to save and restore images from external/network drives.)
