Solved Image your system with free Macrium

Ok, I have the Pro version so I can't check myself but can one click on the Other Tasks tab at the top of the screen in the free version, click on Edit Defaults, and get this screen?

In the free version the "verify" is an option under Restore. Yes it does take about as long to make the image. I don't know exactly what checking it does - maybe Wolfgang's suggestion of a hash check is it.
If you can mount the image explore and maybe even copy out a file then that builds some confidence. Then you can do that with Windows inbuilt imaging which for some users seems not to restore.

A verify during restore sounds pretty useless to me unless you keep a whole stack of images - I always keep about 10. If the verify turns out an error what do you do when this is your only image or if you made incrementals.

If one is concerned about the veracity of their images, just set Reflect to automatically verify after making an image. I've had only one image fail to verify; I ran it again and it verified the second time. I've never had an image fail to restore.

I agree that verifying an image just before restoring is pretty much futile. That's why I have Reflect automatically verify after making an image. If it fails, I will still have the opportunity to make another one.

I do keep a stack since one can never tell how far one may need to go back to bail out of a problem. I only image my boot drive.

Sounds like I guessed it right. They check the hash.

You are correct; sorry about that! Apparently, the free version will not automatically verify an image after creation; yet another reason I'm glad to be using the Pro version. I'm surprised Macrium doesn't promote that when comparing their various versions; that's a marketing goldmine.

Absolutely. I would have upgraded for that alone. Not to mention any point on a comparison chart is valuable.

I think you are a little unusual in that.

I can't remember the last time I bothered to verify an image. I only do it when testing products.

Not for my own use.

What bother? I start the image, then leave it alone and do something else (watch TV, web surf, skip to my loo, snag a snack, whatever). About 9.5 minutes later, the image is done and verified without any bother on my part. I've had only one image to fail to verify. Had I found out just before or while restoring it, I would have been powerfully P.O.ed. Instead, I just ran it again and had no problems.
