I have a fridge which is more than thirty years old and a freezer even older which finally gave up the ghost last week.

My 1974 mobile home still has the original refrigerator (you do the math; I'm not awake yet). I had to replace the evaporator fan back in August of2007 (I can remember the date because that was a really bad year for me).

I have my grandfather's railroad watch that's 138-139 years old (and it still works; I wind it up every year on New Year's Day). Does that count?

You need to select both.

Here is what you can do:

Image the 100MB partition once and stick it into a safe place. It never changes unless you make a double boot. Then you make a second image. And in case you want to get rid of the double boot, you only have to restore the first image of the 100MB partition and then you can delete the double booted OS partition.

The OS partition you should image often - at least once per week. But with those images you need not reimage the 100MB partition.

Note: The 100MB partition contains the bootmgr and should you have to restore to a completely new disk (because your old disk broke), you need that partition. Else your system will not boot.

Now I do things a bit differently. I move (copy) the bootmgr from the 100MB partition to C:\ and then I forget about the 100MB partition all together.

Even simpler just select:
"Create an image of the partition(s) required to backup and restore windows"
If you have a system reserved, it will be included.

Sure, that is a good way too. I actually always copy the bootmgr to C and forget about the system partition.

I do the same thing. 'Tis simpler and I'm simple minded.

I format the drive and mark it active prior to installing, no reserved partition them, it's a part of C:\. As I understand, the reserved partition is needed only if Bitlocker is used since it holds the encryption key.

I'd still keep system reserved if I was multi booting to the same drive. Then like some others I would prefer to multi boot to a separate internal drive using the BIOS. The last PC I built for someone I didn't bother with system reserved.

I would like to change a HDD in a pretty old desktop PC. Now it has a SATA drive and I'd like to make a full system image of the whole drive and then recover it to and IDE drive - and use that one in the PC (and use the SATA drive for something else). Would that be possible with Macrium Reflect Free? Thanx!

I would think it is possibel although I have never done that. Check whether Macrium sees the ide drive. Just start Macrium on that system and see which frives can be seen.

This Macrium video shows it being redeployed to an IDE drive (see 1:54). If you click the YouTube icon in the lower right you will find a load of their videos.

Correct - but why don't you try it with a little test partition. I always have a little 2GB test partition with some data for such trials.

I am afraid there won't be many people around here who have used Macrium on IDE disks.

Yes, I understand that. It was to point out Macrium will work with IDE/PATA drives, it doesn't care.

Yes try it, nothing to lose, knowledge to gain. the worst that can happen is you can't restore to the IDE drive in which case you will be where you are now.

I don't have a board with IDE headers or I would give it a test.

The redeploying of the paid version refers to dissimilar hardware, such as after replacing a MOBO. If you are only changing HDDs in the same machine, the free version should work just fine.
