Imaging with free Macrium

This tutorial shows imaging with free Macrium Version 5.0. If you are still using Macrium Version 4.2, go to this Vimeo site where the tutorial of that version is stored.

The Video does not show the recovery part because I have no setup to screen capture it. But Keith (Kado) made this excellent recovery tutorial with text (but no sound) that he captured from a virtual partition.

   Warning

Note that the external disk to which you image must be formatted in NTFS. A disk that is formatted in Fat32 will accept an image, but the recovery programs cannot restore that image. You can, however, mount (open) a Fat32 image as VHD.

   Note

The production of the WinPE recovery CD (which is highly recommended) may take up to 3 hours because Macrium needs to download the 1.7GB WAIK (Windows Application Installation Kit). For your convenience I have uploaded a ready made .iso of the WinPE recovery disc. That can be downloaded in appr. 8 minutes which clearly beats the WAIK download. Once you downloaded and unzipped the folder, you can burn it directly to a CD with e.g. ImgBurn.

I draw your attention to the fact that this WinPE CD can also be used to make images. That may be convenient in case you do not want to install Macrium on your PC.

The imaging program that was used for this tutorial is free Macrium. But the basic principles are the same for other imaging programs although the user interface will be different.

This video runs for appr. 7 minutes.

Version 5 which is only available in the paid version now does all partitions on the backup by default. You can still do individual partitions. It also doesn't seem to give you any opportunity whether to restore the mbr or how to mark the partitions.

3. In here is a 7-zip file. Unzip it directly onto your windows partition - e.g. C:

as I mentioned you can run the diskrestore.exe from any appropriate pe environment. This includes the Hirens boot CD.

I find diskrestore.exe highly constrained.

So you can have v4 as your installed version and v5 as your boot media version if you like.

Mmm... Not sure what I'm doing wrong. I get an ISO with no boot.wim in its sources folder.

Couple of possibilities.

Is that an HP machine?

They may have put some of the required files in a non standard place.

The app. is supposed to tell you if that's the case.

Otherwise, it may be you pulled focus from the commands at an important moment.

Just rt click , run as admin - don't touch anything till it asks if you want to make an .iso.

See if that works.

If it is an oem isue - will have to find what and get a workaround.

1. Yes it is an HP machine.
2. I ran it again without touching it. Same result.
3. I also noticed that the diskrestorex64.exe was not in the macrium section of the mount folder. I am on v5 and I extracted it from a reflectpe.iso that I had created earlier using 7zip and copied it to the program files reflect folder.

I have attached images of the contents of the folders.

I will have a proper look around over the weekend. I think I will also attempt to put it on a USB stick. I don't particularly like DVDs.

I have managed to add it to Yumi and had a good look around. It's like Xmas has come again. Great product.

I seem not able to make differential nor incremential backups with the Macrium Free.

Is there a workaround ?
