in 32-bit Windows 7, DOS program does not recognize COM port. Help nee

I'm running an ancient DOS program in 32-bit WIN 7. Program works fine except when I need to communicate with a scanner connected to a virtual COM port through a COM to USB adapter. Any suggstions would be greatly appreciated.
