hellow,

the problem started back when I installed partition magic 32 bit version on my win7, after installation it gave a message which I dont remember but it was some kind of drive fixing message I clicked yes and then my second drive drive D: got vanished since then I tried access it via partition wizard and acronis disk director suite and both softwares show all the drive data on the partition but I cannot copy it, I tried changing drive letter but after apply for action it stays the same and windows disk management utility gives an error while changing drive letter "The operation failed to complete because the Disk Management console view is not up-to-date. Refresh the view by using the refresh task. If the problem persists close the Disk Management console, then restart Disk Management or restart the computer." I just want to copy my data from the drive to my external drive so I can format the whole drive and make it work.

Is this Partition Magic by Semantec? If so it does not support Windows OS later than XP. In Vista changes were made to NTFS that XP software cannot know about or support.

If another software please specify.

hellow,......... since then I tried access it via partition wizard and acronis disk director suite and both softwares show all the drive data on the partition but I cannot copy it..........

Did you use Partition Recovery Wizard in Partition Wizard? Did double clicking on the selected partitions show you the files?

The Partition Explorer in Partition Recovery Wizard can only show the files but you cannot copy them. You have to close the Partition Explorer and click on Finish and then Apply for the partitions to be restored.( If necessary, give the same drive letters to the partitions as it existed before, before clicking on Apply). Your HDD will be restored to its original condition and you should be able to access your HDD as before.

Have a look at this http://www.sevenforums.com/software...ive-turned-raw-partition-wizard-testdisk.html Go to the topic Recovery with Partition Wizard: SanDisk Cruzer Blade 16GB and follow the steps.

yes its Symantec partition manager it asked to fix something and I clicked yes hence I lost my partition, yes partition wizard and acronis director suite both make me view my data problem is how to access it and transfer it to an external hard drive ? I have been searching all day long and found out that PM did it with many people it simply corrupted the partition table so how can I repair partition table without losing the data ?

hmmm....you said "both software PW and Acronis show all the drive data on the partition but I cannot copy it."

Never mind. Run Partition Recovery Wizard in Partition Wizard as in the referenced thread and check whether you can recover the partition. Instead of the pendrive it will be your HDD in your case.

Only follow what is under the topic Recovery with Partition Wizard: SanDisk Cruzer Blade 16GB and be sure to select your problem HDD and not your system disk.

I am hitting the sack now and will be back only after another eight hours.

My desktop has conked off. So I am busy reviving it.

For the time being quit Test Disk and post a screenshot of how your HDD/s look like. I am not sure whether by Drive D, you mean a different drive or a partiiton on your system disk.

A screenshot will perhaps clear the air and enable others to advise you on how to proceed. ( I will most probably be off till my desktop comes alive.)

In case it is only a partition in your internal system drive, you may perhaps be better off with whs's suggesstion in post #5.

well fortunately I copied most important data via testdisk and it was easy, fast and flawless but my bad i followed the steps given on testdisk site (TestDisk Step By Step - CGSecurity) please look at the Partition table recovery segment where it says "It's now possible to write the new partition structure.
Note: The extended partition is automatically set. TestDisk recognizes this using the different partition structure.
menu write
If all partitions are listed and only in this case, confirm at Write with Enter, y and OK.
Now, the partitions are registered in the partition table."

i did the same simple selected write and guess what ? after restart now I see this "no bootable device ...insert boot disk" kicking myself now there is still some data left that should be recover to save my time from downloading it again.. no I am trying to make hiren's bootable USB another thing which is happening since yesterday is that now system is not booting from USB stick I used Sardu to made a bootable usb stick, i have hp dv 7 and a month ago i updated my bios could it be due to bios ? trying to provide all the necessary information so you guys can understand my situation properly .. and thanks for all of you for your support and help :)

Try to recovery your files using the Win7 disk to Copy & Paste - in Windows Recovery Console

or Paragon Rescue Kit Free Edition 11.0 Free free CD, burning ISO to CD with Windows Image Burner.

If you can see the files then you should be able to copy them out if nothing else is done to the drive first.

After you have the files do a Clean Install Windows 7
after wiping the HD with Diskpart Clean Command ..

Dear Greg,

there is a not at the bottom of the post in your mentioned thread "Try to recovery your files using the Win7 disk to" and it says your partition must be readable and my partition is not readable ill look into other options as you recommended thank you :)

If you can see your data then you should be able to copy it out using one of the methods you've been given. This is why I said not to do anything else until you had copied out your data.

From what Test Disk is reporting about an Extended partition it seems the partition may have been converted to Logical Extended which is not able to boot an OS. Is it referring to C partition above? If you can see the partition in Partition Wizard bootable CD then you can try to Set Partition as Primary, then Mark Partition Active to run Startup Repair - Run 3 Separate Times.

But first try to copy out your data.

Thanks greg.. I have download hiren's boot cd will it do the job ? because its irritating to download so many softwares it takes time and i am already frustrated so If hiren's boot cd can do the job as well please let me know..

Reason why I wanted you to quit Test Disk four hours ago was, a wrong move can spoil the broth. As was my fear you did it. You should have copied all data when you had that chance.

Anyway now go along with what Greg says and see whether you can recover the rest of the data.

( I am still busy with my desktop. The work is only half-done. The power supply was the culprit. I have to get a new one.)

well I was already started the process when you went to sleep, anyway now will try according to greg's advice,
i want to know few stuffs, what is the science behind partition table and does a corrupted partition table destroys data? and what if I take out and connect my hard drive to a linux based system will it be accessible on it ? I am asking all sorts because i want to copy my data and not to further try any other software and try to leave the hard drive as it is and copy whatever I can by attaching it to another computer
