Incomplete backup, not enough space.

My backups are incomplete. I choose the "Let Windows Choose" to perform the backup but ends up being incomplete due to lack of space.

My laptop has a 250 GB HDD and I created a 100 GB partition for the backup. Since I have 80 GB of used space I assume 100 GB backup partition would be enough.

Does my backup partition need to have more free space than my primary partition (150 GB after making partition)? I cannot seem to expand my backup partition size to where it has more space than my primary partition size because of unmovable files...

If I understand correctly, you have a bad strategy.

There is not much point in "backing up" to a partition on the same hard drive as your C partition. If your hard drive fails, you will lose both C and the backup files.

Get a separate external hard drive and back up to it. There is no particular need to make a separate "backup" partition on that external hard drive. You can just use a single partition with a proper folder structure.

Yes, I know of the disadvantages of doing backups to an internal drive. However, I just wanted to know why it was incomplete.

The "including system image" is confusing me. I read that this feature copies the entire C: drive. If so, would my internal backup partition space have to be larger than the amount of space that came with this laptop? Is there no compression feature?


In summary, this laptop came with a 250 HDD. I want to back up just 80GB (data files) and include a system image of the C: drive. This backup is being done to a partition of my C: drive (internal backup).
