inquiry on Environment variables

I was looking more into Environment Variables and i was wondering if i should add any to the list for USER or just leave it alone: is there any benefit to adding variables for user like performance wise? what is good setup for variables?

Why do you want to do this? What do you think you will accomplish?

There is no point at all in adding new variables unless there is a use for them.

Leave them alone.

Like all system settings, never add to or change environment variables unless you have a specific purpose and you understand what you are doing. These are not user preferences that can be changed in relative safety. Mistakes (which are very easy to make) can have serious consequences. That goes double for the system variables.

A variable for doing what?
They're just small pieces of data, unless you know some program uses them they'll just get ignored. Performance-wise there isn't any difference in having unused variables, but why bother if they don't do anything?
What's your exact idea?

my idea was to gain faster performance for applications such built in windows apps that take time to load. I want to speed up all windows app processes like opening event vwr etc. i have a powerful hardware pc but yet win 7 still runs sluggish.

Check your registry setting here:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\MenuShowDelay

Mine is set to 40 as I read somewhere that using a lower figure can cause problems.

Slow opening of windows can make the computer seem sluggish even if it isn't. Other than that check your virtual memory settings.

Environment variables have nothing to do with performance, they're just small pieces of data that programs may use, but that's all about them.

There is nothing like set performance=fast

If your computer is slow you should investigate what causes that. Startup programs are a good place to start, as an example.

Obviously not, but that's all you'll get from environment variables. They're irrelevant if you want to optimize.

Obviously there are other tweaks both good or bad. However the above tutorial is a good place to start.

Re: Environment Variables. Personally I use a tool that checks for invalid paths but it's not exactly easy to use and removing invalid paths doesn't really improve performance anyway!

I would suggest taking off your old XP hat and put on the Windows 7 hat.

Windows 7 does not need or want all those kinds of things that we all did with XP.

We do have this tutorial by Brink that might meet your desires.
You can pick and choose the options you want to use.
I don't know anybody that does all of them.
