Hi Everyone

I'm about to receive a shiny new laptop. The only problem is it comes with Windows 8.

Now i'm not necessarily against the change to windows 8, though I'm not a fan of it's new menu system that just seems to hide things in in-obvious places...

Anyway... as a theoretical question;

Q: Can I install my Windows 7 copy from my current laptop onto my new one?

I don't know if changing machines would create any conflicts, or if there is a licensing thing saying the copy on my laptop applies to one machine only...but that's why I'm here! Hopefully you guys can tell me

Thanks in advance

If Windows 7 came preinstalled on your laptop it is probably an OEM license meaning it is tied to that computer only and cannot be moved to another one.

There is another angle to this. If your new PC has Win 8.1 Professional, it can be downgraded to Win 7 Professional. This is only allowed with the Professional versions of the two. It seems strange that Microsoft would not allow all versions to be downgraded, but that is the way it is. Understanding downgrade rights
You would not have to buy the license in this case. To downgrade any other versions you would have to spend the $100 or so for the license which I am sure you don't want to do.
