Look behind you...
Hi,I friend just got a new laptop.
From thw store where he bought it,the OS of the laptop was an Ubuntu.
I tried to install windows 7,but won't let me.
I can't access "Format" from the installation process.
Down on the windows that is opened when installing windows 7,it says "Windows 7 cannot be installed on this partition because the format is not NTFS,and is not enough space on the disk"
The laptop got only 2 partitions 0 and 1,and both of them are out of free space.
Thanks.
The laptop is Acer.

Hello, here's some more information about the wipe process and be sure to post back with any further questions you may have and to keep us informed.

After you have copied out or made back-ups of the data you need to save to external media, use Step One of this tutorial at the link below to do a wipe (secure erase) to the entire Hard Disk Drive / Solid State Drive.
  • Then if you do not want to create the new Windows 7 "System Reserved" partition use the outline in Step Two #2 to create, format and mark Active a single 100GB partition to do the installation to.
  • If you do want to create the "System Reserved" partition use the outline in Step Two #3 to create, format and mark Active the System Reserved partition and then create and format the 100GB partition to do the installation to.
Either way, running the "clean all" then creating and formatting the partition(s) using diskpart will get you the best possible space to do a clean install of Windows 7 to; you can always extend the Windows partition to include the remaining unallocated space on the HDD / SSD or create additional Primary partitions or an Extended partition after the installation completes if you choose.

During the install process, Select the advanced disk formatting right near the start of the install (I'm sorry I forget the exact term). In there you should be able to list the installed disk and it'll show the partitions. Delete all the current partitions on the disk. Then there wil be enough room to create a new windows partition and format it for install :)

Okok, thank you all for the responses. I'll try the next stps, please tell me if it will work.
After I boot up from the cd/dvd ,select the language, clock etc, when I get the partition screens.
I select advance options,
Delet one of the partition, and try to create a new one,not to mess everything up.
And if it work I'll try the same thing with the mext partition.
Will it be good?

If you want to have nothing but windows on the disk, delete ALL the partitions, then create one new one covering the full disk. Of course if you like having a system and data partitions seperately then go for that :)

You've now had three separate posts advising to wipe the HD with Diskpart Clean All, since having the Ubuntu boot manager GRUB on the HD can corrupt Win7 until it is wiped from the HD.

Have you gotten the message?

Hello guys,
I’m a new member .I read this question and its answers, and I found them related to my problem.
My laptop was containing Ubuntu system. I did these following steps to replace it with windows 7:
1- Entered a windows 7 cd.
2- Deleted all partitions and created new partitions.
3- Installed windows 7.
4- Finally, after downloading the system, it goes in a loop and restarts itself. Nothing happens.
After I’ve read these answers I applied them to my problem (I used the diskpart to clean my hdd, partition, format it), and the same problem existed.
The only thing that I doubt is that I used the installer to create the third partition, and not the diskpart.
Note: My laptop is DELL inspiron 14z,core i3.
I wish to help me what to do with my problem.
regards,

Where did you get Win7 DVD? Did you burn it yourself?

Unplug all other HD's and peripherals,

Boot into BIOS setup, reset to defaults, save changes. Next if an EFI BIOS, enable Legacy BIOS, set DVD drive first to boot, HD second. Then set SATA controller to AHCI. Save changes and Exit.

Then boot into installer DVD or flash stick burned or written using tool and latest ISO for your licensed OS version here.

At first installer screen Press Shift + F10 to open a Command Box, type:

DISKPART
LIST DISK
SELECT DISK 0 (after confirming Windows 7 target HD #)
CLEAN
CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY SIZE=102400 (for 100gb partition, adjust as desired)
FORMAT FS=NTFS LABEL="WINDOWS 7"
ACTIVE
EXIT
EXIT

Next click Install Now, then Custom install to Clean Install Windows 7 to the partition you created. If it fails then report back at which step and the verbatim error message.

In addition read over these steps to understand the tools and methods which work best to get and maintain a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7. The steps are the same for retail.

After install you can adjust partition size or Create new partitions for data, etc. in Disk Mgmt. We are creating the partition here to mark it Active which overcomes certain install failures.

Thanks alot gregrocker,
My problem was solved
i just followed what you told me

just I have another question

After install you can adjust partition size or Create new partitions for data, etc. in Disk Mgmt. We are creating the partition here to mark it Active which overcomes certain install failures

I have just one partition which contains the Windows 7 system, now if i want to create another partition i should use Disk Mgmt to mark it Active. Is that right? Do you mean by disk mgmt that i should go to computer right click then manage?
If I used the windows installer to partition the rest hdd and didn't mark it active, what will happen?

thanks with regards,

It says that the purpose of creating a partition using the Diskpart commands before install is so that it can be marked Active. You already marked it Active when you typed out the Commands. That is sometimes needed for the installer to see the partition intended for Win7. You should not mess with the Active flag afterwards. The System partition must remain Active for it to boot.

If you want to create a new partition on the same HD for data or any other reason, then shrink C in Disk Management to create it using these steps:
Partition or Volume - Shrink
Partition or Volume - Create New

Thank you so much gregrocker for giving valuable information.
