Installed/usable RAM memory?

When I check System Properties, it says Installed memory (RAM): 4GB (2.75GB usable). When I check Task Manager, it also shows me 2814MB Total physical memory. I am using Windows 7 RTM x86. How can I get all of my installed RAM working? I googled a bit, found out something about memory remaping option in BIOS, but I have no such option in the BIOS. I am using a Acer Aspire 5737Z laptop with a Geforce 9400m graphics card. Please, any help would be much appreciated.

Hi starterz and welcome to Se7en Forums

That looks about right. On 32-bit systems, the total amount of memory that can be addressed is 4GB. Within that address range, there are also the system I/O devices and other hardware. These in effect take up some of the available memory space, so the amount of physical memory available to your system actually reduces by that amount. Depending on your system's hardware and configuration, this can be anything ranging from 256MB to 1GB (typically 768MB). However, that can vary. In addition, on a laptop the GPU is allocated a portion of your RAM for its own use.

This is from my system. What does yours show for the Graphics section?

Correct me if I'm wrong,

Win7 32bit can be made to show 4gb installed but can only allocate 3gb.

By my knowledge the maximum usable memory on 32bit OS is 3gb.

Greetz.

In 32-bit Windows, each application has its own “virtual” 4GB memory space.

This 4GB space is evenly divided into two parts -
2GB dedicated for kernel usage
2GB for application usage.

Each app gets its own 2GB.
All applications the same 2GB kernel space.

Windows uses virtual memory.

The preceding is vastly oversimplified, and in the process, somewhat erroneous. If you are interested in learning something you really do not need, we can virtually spend a few hours addressing the matter.

Correcting me or were you speaking in general terms? :p :D:D:D

Please don't answer that.

I know you are going to say; both. :roflmao:

You know me too well.

I was tempted to write that Windows 'goes Ducth' on the 4GB, splitting it two ways between kernel and app - but that would have been just plain wrong. ;)

I hear you. lol :D

I always wondered where that saying originated.

I know most of my fellow country men and women to be very generous to others. Just a little less to them selves.

Except, exceptions of course.

We do often split the bill between friends, male or female, but here it's better known as respectively friendship and emancipation. ;)

But back OT.

I stand corrected. :D:D:D
