Internal Harddrive Keeps Turning Off

Hello

I have an old internal hard drive 3.5 out of an old PC, wanting to use as a external hard drive. I have tried to use it with my laptop and PC. As soon as i turn on any of the units the drive is set up to, the drive shuts down straight away.

Your thinking, how i have it set up. I have taken the cables from the internal hard drive in laptop or PC and connect strait to the old internal hard drive 3.5.

I have tried a USB to SATA 22-Pin 2.5" Hard Disk Driver Adapter Cable but this will not work.

I have tried putting a windows OS on drive booting from flash drive, It will not work.

I would be grateful for any input from anyone

If I am understanding correctly, you are using the USB attachment you linked to, to run a 3.5" hard drive. That will not work on a 3.5" drive. It will work on a 2.5" drive. But, a 3.5" drive requires more power than the USB can put out. An external 3.5" hard drive needs it's own external power source, or needs to be installed inside a desktop computer with the standard connections for power and data.

This was the first thing i tried, when i turn on the PC it shuts down straight away with this drive installed.

Do you mean the hard drive shuts down or the computer shuts down? If it is the computer and the Hard drive is properly installed, then there is a very good chance the hard drive is dead. As for as the external Dock that Doc Brown showed, that is an excellent idea. I use 3 of them with my computers.

The computer shuts down anyway, but which is first i don't know. I have tried another drive on the same PC and all is ok.

The dock I showed the pic of will hold a 2.5 or 3.5 IDE HD in the first slot and a 2.5 or 3.5 Sata HD in the second slot.

I even have another dock that has 3 slots, 2 for Sata & 1 for IDE.

You can see a lot of pics of different brand units on eBay, Amazon, NewEgg, & TigerDirect.
