New Lenovo ThinkPad (Win-7 PRO x64) has Internet Explorer 9 installed
NEW in August-2015 stored until now in its original box (never used)
Win-10 forced updates scared me off putting the Lenovo into service
And a stroke on 1-Sept-2015 wiped out too many brain cells ... I lost my nerve for about 18months or so
Q: is there a good reason to update to IE-11
IE is not broken on either machine
I also have a desktop rig with Win-7 PRO x64 and it has IE-8 installed
IE is only used in an emergency on both machines ... using (in order) PaleMoon, Firefox, Vivaldi (and IE if I must)
- some AV banking tools only recognize IE

Thank you :)

Assuming you're running W7 SP1, you should upgrade to Internet Explorer 11 as any previous IE browser versions (8,9,10) are no longer supported by Microsoft (MS). In other words, MS no longer provides security updates to patch any vulnerabilities that may exist in Internet Explorer 10 (or older) that attackers could exploit.

I agree with Sky Ranch.
IE is an integral part of windows and if you don't have the latest version ( IE 11 ) and the latest security updates for it you are wide open for trouble.

You should upgrade IE to the latest version and keep it updated. This applies whether you use it or not. IE is not just a browser but an integral part of the OS. You may not use IE but there are Windows components and third party applications that use it's components or the browser itself. This can happen in ways that are far from obvious.

IE 11 has a cool feature of password peek which enables you to verify your password hidden behind the bullets before finally submitting it. This is not a good reason but it is definitely cool.

Thank you all for your feedback :)

Thank you
I know that VBA (Excel 2003) uses a very obscure feature of IE to "do something"
- parameters were case sensitive , and it took me days just to get it right.
That was a long time ago I created a 1GB (addin to rebuild Excel files from scratch to reduce bloat.
- worksheets, modules and forms (but not graphs, they were too complex)
The ribbon in MS Office destroyed my enthusiasm, then cancer of the tongue + a stroke wiped a few to many synapses.
