Internet loses connection, can't shutdown or troubleshoot

My browser connection completely stops working. I check my computer's network center but it says that I'm still connected. After about ten minutes the network center shows a "!" symbol like it usually does when my internet turns off. I tried resetting the modem (unplugging everything and waiting 15 minutes before replugging) but it did nothing. I try to troubleshoot my network to see what's wrong but it doesn't respond. I try to restart my computer or relog but those commands don't respond. Nothing network-based responds by this point. I have to manually turn off the computer with the power switch. After that, everything (usually) resets and it works fine.

I've had to deal with this 2-3 times a day for two weeks now and I'm afraid that shutting off my computer this way is going to damage it. I'm worried about my computer and would really like to find a solution to this problem before my computer starts getting worse.

I think I have some form of network virus but I'm not sure. I tried checking for problems with Avast and MalwareBytes but nothing came up other than junk files, and after deleting those I still had this problem. For the most part, I'm only having this problem on my own computer. The others seem to be unaffected when it happens. My primary browser is Firefox and if I try to access any networks after this happens, they don't respond.
