Hello Gelapir,

It might be possible yes, but I don't think that we are allowed to discuss it here on the Seven Forums, as it can be seen as hacking.
See our Forum rules to check for yourself (especially rule 6).

Good luck,
Nommy

He might be trying to Identify a Troll, there may be things you can do to identify the person from the post, but I don't think there is ANY way to locate someone using their IP addy on FB.

Just make a screenshot of the post and make sure the DATE and TIME are evident, and send it to Facebook, actually all you have to do is block the user, and when the panel comes up, specify your complain in the little box, and MAYBE FB will do something about it.

Or, if this is a person who is interrupting a Group, and you are the Admin of the Group, you CAN find out personal information about them even if they are not your friend, because you are the Admin- And you can ban them.

But finding an IP address? facebook is not a Bulletin Board, so you can't get the IP addy, it wold not do you much good anyway, many people hide behind Anonymizers.

Unless you have friends at NASA or law enforcement I don't believe you can get a posters IP address legally.

There was one time I used Tor/Onion Browser to try to post to Facebook. My account was instantly put on hold until I could log in and prove my identity. It had send me to India, see? It was an instant Lockout.

So, Facebook is anal about 2 things - Knowing that YOU are the person using the account, and if it looks like your account is being hacked, BOOM, your account gets secured. Second, they will protect your identity as much as they will protect the identity of the Troll you want to eradicate. They do not take sides, they do not respond to emails, there is no phone number, and their decisions are non-debatable.

You just have to live within those restrictions, they designed it like that for protection, to protect you and to protect them from you. If you have friends and family connected, thats one thing. But you should not allow Strangers to view your page, that means "friend of friends" should not be able to post on your wall. It's all in how you set up your security, just do nto add any hot looking chicks who are sniffing for an "add" because those people are not who they say they are, and they vanish instantly. If you add them, they get your phone number s and addresses, and they spam you.

I doubt that this is possible. Facebook would have this information but they are hardly likely to tell you.
Be aware that even if you did obtain the IP address there is next to nothing you can do with it. The most you could do is find the general geographic area (city) where the post was made from. And even that could be wrong. You cannot obtain a specific address or other personal information. Also be aware that this location may have nothing to do with the poster. The post could have been made from a public Internet access point anywhere in the world, possibly in a different country than the individual in question lives.

The only way he can is to either be an Admin of a BBS or an employee of Facebook. But as I said, Facebook, as much as it LOOKS like a BBS, is NOT a BBS, it is not run like one, the programming is complex and it simply does not show anybody's IP address anywhere, except in the user's Privacy settings. so yes it would be hacking to gain entry to someone's facebook account, but they will lock you out instantly if you detect an IP address which is not in the same range as the ones you usually use. Usually within a city this is OK, and states, but if the IP address change is drastic, they will lock down your account.

I've had people track me down to my doorstep using my IP address, this was back in 1998. Consequently, I tracked down a guy who was trying to get into my Computer Banking Software using a hacked version of mIRC. If I had been using Quicken back then, he WOULD have gotten all of my info, but I was using MS Money at the time.

But I kept noticing something called "HH" was booting with my system, so I traced it to a batch file which was cleverly planted in my system, it started a hidden mIRC client, which was sending to a specific IP address with a user name and password!

I mean this guy was Stoopid! And, his IP resolved to a few blocks away from me. He was also a Cox Cable user, I just bundled up everything, all of the files he had sent, and the information I had gleaned from it, and forwarded it to the Abuse department, and then I started pinging his IP every hour. It stopped returning the ping after 2 hours, and it no longer resolved to the guys address. so I'm pretty sure I got him.

Of course I could have been the one who was fooled, a master hacker could have made it look like that guy, I have heard about such things.

But the point is, IP addresses are not reliable indicators of who is using them, and they no longer can trace you to your house, no matter how many times Astrid did it on Fringe.

Unlike a telephone number an IP address has no permanent connection with anyone using it. It is just your current logical address on the Internet. But the IP address doesn't belong to you. That IP address belongs to your ISP or to some other ISP you are using to access the Internet, such as a public Internet access point. You might have a static IP address but that is just an agreement between you and your ISP. More typically it will be a dynamic IP address temporarily leased to you and subject to change at any time. In the case of a dial up connection it will likely change every time you connect.

Only the ISP in question knows who is using what IP address at any given time. In most countries they would be prohibited from revealing this information without presentation of proper legal authority, usually to a member of a law enforcement organization. And if that IP address is being used by a public Internet access point the actual user is still unknown, and probably unknowable.

There are services that will trace an IP address to the owning ISP. But the results can be in error. At one time such a service showed my location as being some 1000 miles (1600 KM) west of where it really is. The ISP's domain was properly identified as a .ca domain but it still managed to get the country wrong as well.

As I posted before. I don't know about all countries but in most cases you need legal authority to get such information legally.
