iPad not recognized as a device by Windows Explorer

I connected my iPad to my PC with the USB cable, as per some instructions I was following online, and apparently Windows Explorer is supposed to recognize it as a device and show it in the list of connected devices - but it doesn't. It simply doesn't show up. I'd like to move the photos from the iPad to the PC. Any ideas?

Try unlocking the ipad and then connecting. If you have never connected it before you need to confirm a prompt for access.

Do you have iTunes installed on the computer? I may be wrong, but I think you need iTunes for it to be recognized in Windows. Do you hear a sound from the computer indicating it knows something has been plugged into it when you connect the ipad?

and it is a windows 7 machine, correct? I had the same issue with win 10, and after several hours on the phone with MS, and Apple, Apple finally told me that iTunes wasn't supported on win 10. Rolled my laptop back to 8.1, while on vacation, and all worked well.

No need for iTunes.

Plug-in the iPad, get the "Device Connect" sound, on the iPad a pop-up asks if you want to "Allow access to photos and videos" and if you Allow, you should see "Apple iPad" in Portable Devices in Windows Explorer, under My Computer, along with your Hard Disk Drives and Devices with Removeable Storage. Double-click yields an Internal Storage and within that a DCIM folder.

Only caveat is that this will not happen unless you have at least one photo or video on your iDevice.

I was able to pull it up on my 7 virtual machine without having itunes installed. I had never connected it before.

Thanks for the replies. I'm not sure what "unlock your iPad" means, unless it means typing in the passcode, which I already did. Yes, it is Windows 7. No, it does not have iTunes installed. Yes, there are a lot of photos on the iPad. When I plug in the iPad, the only message I get is one asking me if I trust the computer to which I have just connected it. (So, one would assume that message means that the iPad at least recognizes that it has been connected to another device.) I say that I do, then . . . nothing. I get no other messages. I think it's Windows that doesn't realize something else has been connected . . .

That sounds right. You are suppose to confirm that trust prompt and after that it should show up. Do you get any notices that it is installing drivers? Does it show up in device manager? It should be there under portable devices. As stated you don't need itunes but you should have it installed to perform backups, if nothing else. BTW a backup using itunes does backup your photos however you won't be able to access them directly. Also I've never used it but there is their cloud system. If nothing else you could get a gmail account, upload the photos using the google drive app, and then download them using your browser.

I don't know who told you this but iTunes installs and works fine on Windows 10 systems.
