ipv6 or not?

Just curious. Personally I have no use whatsoever for ipv6 and have no reason to expect that to change any time soon. Like wise the Internet. In Windows 7 and from what I believe (never used it) Vista, ipv6 is not only standard nut activated by default, want it or not! Worse still is Teredo (search for this and security on you favorite search engine) which is a nightmare. Personally, I think (using my firewall logs as confirmation) the best thing to do is disable ipv6 completely until there is reason to use it. Please add your opinions

Hello Orbital Shark. thank you for your comment. I am quite well aware of what ipv6 is. My question is should/do we use/need it now.

As I said im my previous post, Teredo is a nightmare and is best disabled asap. For most people ipv6 may or may not be important sometime in the future.

For me and my firewall it's a pain. I don't need it, I don't use it, my ISP does not care.

Yes I'm aware of all the advantages ipv6 offers and I'm also aware of the reality of another 2 or 3 years of the current ipv4 address space.

In my personal opinion, for now, most people should disable it! If not the whole stack then certainly teredo.

for all people ipv6 will be important in about a year time, when we run out of ipv4 addresses. So better get used to it sooner rather then later. Atm ipv6 is not needed, but it provides aditional connectivity.

As of today there is no Need for IPv6 on machines in general use, However the time is approaching when this will change.

I would advise anyone with problems caused by IPv6 on their hardware/ Infrastructure, to by all means disable it, but investigate what will have to be done to counter the specific issues involved.

If you have no issues then I would advise you leave it in place as this will enable you to accept the change when it comes with the least problems

Chances are exceedingly hight that you can safely uninstall this. IPV6 isn't supported by the vast majority of ISP's. Yet.

i actually do believe ipv6 will have important usage because of thing
"Homegroups" which is one of the key features in Win7 for home users
which simplifies interconnections between computers....

also ive been poking around and i am also seeing that disabling IPv6 has the same behavior...

hmm ill try it myself after i get x64....

its upto you the user whether you want the functionality or not and if not the disable ipv6...
i have seen routers brought down to their knees because they cannot handle ipv6 so there are reasons why you have to under all circumstances disable ipv6..

This is a subject currently being addressed or planned by many, many corporations and entities around the world. I am a network administrator, engineer and planner for a very large corporation. We are doing planning now and are looking at implementation within three years. I can't argue against any of the comments in this thread at this time, as IPv6 is not widely adopted yet. However, I would suggest everyone, not just big networks and providers, take this subject seriously. Look at the current information and stay tuned. Major providers and the organization that maintain the internet backbone will be doing implementations now and into next year. The changes will offer enormous enhancements to your online experience. You don't want to miss out. For now you can refer to the American Registry of Internet Numbers (ARIN) or some international registries for additional information.
