(Better) Is It Possible to Change The Time To Close 2nd Explorer.exe?

Hi,
I am experiencing issues with explorer.exe (I found many reports on the web on this), not showing drives or control panel icons, or stop responding (win 7 32 bit Ult.)
I set to open a separate process to explore windows and I got the chance to look for a better file manager and got Directory Opus and set it as the default file manager.
(I use a Dell Precision notebook with certified hardware)

The explorer is still used for some windows, mainly control panel and device and printers.

If the process stands there for a while, at some time, it will start to create issues. With a new 2nd explorer.exe is quite sure it will work.

Checking the task manager I see that the 2nd explorer.exe waits for about 45 s to exit after the last windows close. Is there a place where I could reduce this?

(waiting for some windows fix) The overall impact is quite reduced as I do not use explorer to browse files, but I would know if there is a place where I could set a shorter delay to close explorer.exe after the latest window closes.

You can give this a try, Shut Down -Speed Up.
And SFC /scannow
And Rebuild Icon Cache

If it is the 2nd explorer.exe process you set to run that is slowing shutdown, set it not to run.
I don't quite understand the need for a 2nd explorer process since it is capable of opening/viewing/editing several files at once.

Here's Why Two Explorer

The need is to avoid that having to close the explorer.exe as it quite often create problems of cpu or unresponsiveness , kills the explorer running the desktop (menus and bar).

The setting is in the task bar settings. But the second explorer shutdown occurs after more than 45 s after the last browsing window closes.

I use this notebook on customers' sites and some times critic levels are not compatible with a notebook which create problems where it should simply work, at least for its basic functions on a >>certified hardware<<. But this another story.

I found a good replacement for explorer, but I would need to avoid any misbehavior, and, waiting for a fix from Microsoft, I found that having explorer.exe (That separate browser) shutting down as soon as possible after the last window closes is the better way get a new control panel or control panel item showing up every time. But the time the process waits to exit is more than 45 s.
If I made a mistake in network and sharing center and need to go back to that, I could forget and risk that the notebook could become unresponsive.
Not all the control panel items open in explorer.exe but some and that related to network use explorer.exe to show up.

IconCache.db Missing

Hi,
what I never did before was the recreation of IconCache.db .

I started the batch you suggested and after reboot I cannot see the file (all settings are to show everything, hidden, protected, etc.

Thanks for your suggestion. But could help to check why that is missing?
(Made now a search and the file is not present at all on C:\)

Hi,
Thanks for your suggestion. Now seems quite better. I tried to stress a bit and got only once the actual issue, and once uncertain problem creating 50% cpu that recovered in some time without having to kill the process.

Hi,
I posted another thread to report that I had a problem with the explorer.exe, this time running the desktop, resuming from standby.
I hope that that will be an accident.

The problem with this kind of issues is that when you are not confident, the behaviour change somehow to get back confidence and this generates more issues.

More important, the current configuration is the result of a mitigation plan, that required time and the replacement of explorer as default file manager. Also in this better situation than before the core of the current installation status is tightly related to the adoption of Opus, as I still doubt of fully reliability of the native explorer.

With regard to this, the fact that Opus is a very good software, is still a side effect.

What is Happening

Hi,
I just would give an update on this issue. In the last days my Dell Precision commenced to be usable.
The problems with Desktop/Task Bar explorer.exe were irrelevant.
BUT, I still got some problem with the separated explorer.exe (Cabinet Class) just the first time that I had to come back to control panel two times with a short interval to fix/change a parameter.
So I must confirm that the main reason for the current notebook usability is the replacement of explorer.exe for file management with Directory Opus. Otherwise I would quickly come back to unresponsiveness as I would have to use much more frequently than now the explorer.exe.

I am still wondering why the 2nd explorer waits for 45 seconds to close. I just made now a test on an XP SP3 and the second explorer used for file management closes >>immediately<< after the last window closes.
This seems a bug related to the problem I am reporting. Also I am still looking for a way to get the same behaviour on Windows 7.

I have no more ideas. It would seem this Opus explorer you have is causing the problem. It may not be compatible with Win7. Win7 does many things differently than did XP.

thanks for your reply.
I was forced (also if now I will retain) to look for an independent solution to manage files. Opus has nothing to share with explorer.exe.
It is explorer to create problems, still now when I open views (as control panel) that are still opened in the native window. But, because in the current situation I do not make calls to explorer for control panel, than for quite limited cases, as the notebook went to a production level, the issue is impacting really less than before. Not because was really solved but because was avoided, turning around.

I supposed that Windows 7 makes many things different; the point is that was expected to do that things better, not worst, as explorer is proving.
