Is it safe to install ffdshow x64 in Windows 7?

I'm asking from the following perspectives.

• Is it essentially bug free? I downloaded the 11/17/2009 version.
• Is it generally a good idea to install this older VfW type software in Win7? Don't we have something better at this point?
• Will it override or break anything in Win7 Ultimate x64?
• If I install it will I be able to couple it with WMP12 so that it will do on the fly transcoding of AVI to MPG to my networked display? (it's a DLNA compliant Pioneer plasma)

I checked the site myself, after giving you the URL. The specific addon does not seem to be listed., but FF is comptilbe. If FF is good with 7, add on to FF should be ok. Before you install or delete anything, make a system restore point, so that any problems could be resolved, by going back to an earlier time.

Thanks. I typed in ffdshow too and got nothing as you indicated. I do use the Restore Point function before doing stuff like this, but it's a good recommendation nonetheless.

I guess I could try Shark007's codec package; at least it has a more controllable install routine and has x64 capabilities built-in.

You seem very astute and careful (like me, lol). You may want this advice, if you are not already following it. Right now, before anything else, make a system image on an external hard drive, and update once a month. If anything happens, (system restore may even go down), you can go get the image and you are back in business. The alternative is to reinstall, reactivate and install everything again.

All I can say is DO NOT INSTALL MACROMEDIA FLASH 8 PRO FREE TRIAL!!! If you want tot talk about a Win7 glitch out, Flash 8 really did a number on my OS (temporarily until I rebooted and removed)!

Generally newer apps are good (mid to late 2007 and newer). I would recommend installing apps that say they are able to run on Vista (if the app came out before Win7) or Win7. Because Windows Vista and 7 and similar kernel versions (Vista is [NT 6.0] 7 is [NT 6.1]) anything that can run on Vista should be able to run on 7 assuming that the app does not depend on a specific bit OS like x64 or x86 (32bit). I have seen SOME apps that worked in Vista x86 but not Vista x64. I would then assume that the same problem with it on x64 would happen in Win7.

One of the first things I did before installing Win7 was upgrade my Acronis True Image program to the latest version. I have an identical 750GB drive which I use to do full images of the entire drive. I also do incremental backups when it seems right.

Shark007's codec packs for w7 x86 & x64 (separate packs for each architecture) both contain ffd show as well as all the other codecs you might conceivably need. So I would recommend just installing Sharks packs (both x86 and x64 if you have an x64 system) and that should take care of all your codec needs, (unless you want to also install the pro version of CoreAVC which just came out with a new version 2.0. CoreAVC pro decodes H264 very well and is supported by Sharks settings apps.)

Although it is easy once you know what you are doing, there are a few quirks involved with Sharks codecs regarding installation and updating on x64 systems especially and it is important to spend a few minutes carefully reading the instructions posted on his site on how to install and uninstall. (Note that uninstall of the previous versions and reinstall of the latest versions of both x86 and x64 packs in a specific order is required for updating and he comes out with pretty frequent updates to keep up with the latest versions of the various components of the packs.)

Thanks harpua. Based on my further reading, however, I don't think that will then allow me to stream and transcode to my DLNA compliant plasma TV. It looks like WMP12 doesn't do on-the-fly transcoding. If this is true I'll just install TVersity. It will install whatever codecs are needed.
