Is Linksys 192.168.1.1 set-up page necessary? Why?

Hello, I bought a new Cisco Linksys E2500, Advanced Dual-Band N Router. I have a password on each of my 4 computers; laptops and netbooks. I also passworded up this new router as well through the CD set-up disc provided. If anyone were to hack into my computers, they would have to get by the computer(s) passwords and, as well as the routers password. Do I still need to go into the Cisco Linksys setup page (192.168.1.1) and password it again to make it extremely secure? Would this 3rd-time password on the set-up page be overkill or do I actually need this to be sure no one else is surfing on my signal? It's amazing to me how they could get past computer password and router password too. They are good complicated PWs. I normally work from an external hard drive and have all my data saved there. Presently, I have it unplugged so there is no chance of anyone capturing my information. Thank You!


Will I have to enter the 3rd set of password each time I go on the internet?

Also, I set-up a guest account and passworded that up as well. However, this shows 'Unsecured' when I hover over it. I finally turned off the guest account by way of the Cisco CD set-up disc. How do I secure the guest account? Thank You!

I see the router name and passwords are automatically carried over and stored on the Linksys 192.168.1.1 set-up page through the CD disc provided. I have answered my own question. Thanks!

The computer password is to access the computer.

The router password is to access the router configuration.

The wireless password is to access the wireless signal.

Do u need all 3 yes, but to access the internet you will just need your wireless password to connect to the router.

At the moment you don't have a wireless password and anyone could browse the internet off your connection or try to access any device on your local network.

I don't quite understand what you are asking...?

Are you trying to secure your wireless connection? IE put a Password on your Wireless Home Network?

The web-based page is to access your router so you can edit, change, update the firmware and set up the security of your router. If you haven't done so I so advise doing so.

Yes, I will password up the web-based page so soon as possible but....... do I make a new password?

Right now it is the same password(saved and stored) as what I entered through the CD set-up disc that came in the box. Should I change the password on the web-based set-up page to another PW (2nd) other than what I already entered?

Yes...the default password/log in name is admin and admin for all linksys/Cisco routers...those need to be changed...What encryption did you select. Did you turn off the SSID? All of this is done on the web based page under the wireless tab.

Please refer to my post. I would not make admin your password for your wireless or w/e you changed your router configuration password to. Create something unique the longer the better since you will only have to enter it in once on each device connecting to it.

I will also suggest that you use WPA2 PSK if all your devices are compatible. If they dont work then switch to wpa.

Thanks, will keep researching this. I spoke to Linksys support and they said the Cisco CD disc(Cisco Connect) provided in box was all that was needed to secure up everything tight and proper. She said the web-based 192.168.1.1 is redundant information and a redundant set-up.

When I hover in the lower right-hand corner over the Internet Access icon, it shows that I have;
Name: (my name choice) Signal Strength: Excellent Security Type: WPA2-PSK Radio Type: 802.11n and SSID: (my name choice). Think I should be OK.

I worked the web-based 192 site at the very beginnging thinking I needed that. The first prompt admin/admin was changed at the very beginning when I gave it (my name choice) and password choices then.

Not sure where to find and enter this second set of passwords you speak of.

I'm guessing the second password is your wireless. You can find that in the router configuration web page

Linksys support said the wireless password and the security key are one in the same. My desktop connects automatically each time I go online. For other computers or devices in the area, I only need to put the security key in one time and they too will automatically connect each time in future. Thanks for your time.

Windows 7 has secured password (optional)

Router config. has secured password and is same as wireless(password) security key.

For me, there are a total of 2 only passwords involved.

Exactly, Just make sure that you put a check in the checkbox to remember the password when you're connection to the wireless network with a windows 7 machine.

Thanks everyone, I entered the wireless password into each of my computers and tablet(s) around the house and connected on each. In my case, I only needed to enter the this password one-time each and now they connect automatically each time I use a computer. I don't need to enter this wireless password each time I go online.

Sidebar...... I have computer passwords on all of my machines so I do need enter these each time, no problem. Thank You!
