Is there a way to copy file names as text?

Can anyone tell me how to copy file names in Windows Explorer as a text list so I can paste them into a Word or Excel document? I have many home video files that were named, by default, as the date & time of recording and usually contain 14 digits, e.g., 20120310145034. I want to rename them (by adding additional details) but I also want to be able to manipulate (sort or print) the list. Obviously I don't want to retype each one of the numbered files.

Hi ircool and welcome to the Forum.
Try this, right click on the file name in Win Expl and click "Properties" should open in General tab. Then just highlight the file name and press Ctrl + C. Open your chosen program and Press Ctrl + V at the curser position and the should do what you need. Of course this means doing each file separately

Within Windows Explorer, if you right click while holding down shift key, a new option will appear in the context menu named "Copy as access path".
It just copies all filenames (with full paths too) to the clipboard, then you can paste it anywhere else.

But I thought the OP just wanted to use the file names not the complete path!

Click on Start
type in cmd
navigate to the folder you want the listing
type in dir /b >direct.txt
now you will notice a file in explorer called direct.txt that you can open.

or instead of going through the start menu you can shift right click as had been said and open a new command window there.
