Is there a way to deny printing privialges from certain programs?

Hey,

So - Im a junior I.T technician and I was at work today, installing some new machines, when I got talking to one of the office workers.

She was saying that the person who's computer I was replacing uses there shared HP Deskjet 6540 to print most documents when really it should only be used to print one type: 'lables.docx.'

So this got me wondering whether it were possible or not to deny printing rights to the 6540 from applications such as Outlook - whilst keeping them in word and program 'x' but also allowing Outlook to print to other printers in the office.

Now I think even before asking that this is probably not possible but I need to know either way.

I think the problem you are faced with is that printers are assigned to users and not applications.

That's not to say what you ask can't be done, but I don't know of a way to do it in Windows. A search on Google may reveal third-party applications that can program network printers to carry out specific tasks for specific users.

Don't you have an IT administrator you can get advice from?

Yeah - thats what I found after my google search earlier today - and thought it might need some third party s/w for it. It would be so much easier if the person didn't have to print from the 6540 at all.

And I do - but to be honest I know more than he does in this field - he's more server based.
