id recommend an amd r9 280x, only 1 or 2 fps in it but for alot cheaper, also at higher res the amd card pulls ahead!

Might be wasting money for a rebranded HD 7970, go for the R9 290X!

Lets just slow things down here guys. OP what is your budget for a starter?

Devlin recommends a 280X but infact they are not much cheaper now at all. The 770 just had some big price cuts and is an excellent card.

Rooster, I bought a 290X last week along with a 780, I spend hours testing both out and the 780 won, I would not recommend a 290X right now, mine hit 94C in benchmarks and sounded like a jet plane no joke.

Edit: In answer to the original question, the 770 would be a nice upgrade, I think they were basically rebranded 680s with a few tweaks so it would perform very well in all the latest games.

My brother just bought an r9 280x, he had two HD Radeon 6950's 2gb, there was around a 25% increase, Theres around £60 difference according to the cards they have on SCAN, it also has more ram, performs better at higher resolutions, my brothers runs pretty cool under load, for me id take the r9 280x but if your an nvidia man, then go for that one, both are excellent cards, im just voicing my opinion, these guys on here will be able to tell you alot more than me, just going by my brothers experience and articles ive read, good luck and enjoy your new card when you get it!:)

i recomended a 280x over the 770. its cheaper. just make sure to get either the Asus or Gigabyte one..... not the MSI one. The MSI ones have major coil whining problems

cards cheapest to most expansive:

R9 280x
gtx 770
7970

cards least powerfull to most powerfull

7970
r9 280x
gtx 770

IMO the r9 280x is the best bang for buck. especially with mantel coming out soon. do note, these cards are all pretty much within 10fps max from each other. depends on game. also you really need more than 2gb of vram. in bf3, skyrim, etc, ive gone over 2gb of vram. the 280x has 3gb.

Yes it certainly is, the 770 is a great little card especially now prices have dropped.

Not quite sure it will max out BF4 (my 780 handles everything on ultra) but you'll definitely get very high performance.

So you're saying a GTX680 2GB won't max out BF3 at 1080p on one monitor?

Hi

Thanks for all your answers.

Maybe I should mention that noise is a very important factor for me, because I play in the living room :)

My budget is about 320 euro :)

Is the amount of ram that important? most high end cards have 2 MP it seems.

the new batman is lucky if it uses 1gb of the 280x ram at max settings on 1080p. 3GB is future proofing, imo id got for either the 280x or the 290x

Well Ok - maybe I buy ASUS GeForce GTX 780 3GB PhysX CUDA instead.

Is my Seasonic M12D Powersupply 750W enough for that? :)

Yes it is a 600w PSU needed to power you have more than enough ;)

That's what I thought Solar until my new Classified 780 took out my Antec truepower 750 yesterday  The PSU was approaching 3 years of life though and I believe the classified uses a lot more power than a regular 780.
