It would be reasonable to assume that parallel data transmission would be faster then serial. After all, an entire byte can be sent in one operation on a parallel bus while it must be sent one bit at a time on a serial bus. But in practice serial transmission turns out to be faster. The reasons are quite technical and I will not attempt to describe them. Serial transmission is also cheaper because it requires fewer wires

The original ATA bus was parallel but was later replaced with SATA (Serial ATA) which is faster. USB is currently the most popular standard for communication with external devices and is faster than any existing parallel port. There are competing standards (such as Firewire) but it too is serial.
