It needs the IDE controller normally on older machines but these errors can also indicate other issues, even with hardware.

The best place to start is always googling the error message text exactly.

Did you know that many have in-place Upgraded RC successfully using this workaround: Upgrade the Windows 7 RC to any retail version Icrontic Tech

I just did this for my friend cross country via Remote Desktop while also removing dual boot XP and moving Win7 over into its space. He says it runs much better than RC.

All other reports on this in-place are favorable, too.

thanks a million man, givin it a shot now :-D will keep you posted

well i did as instructed, got so far and received this error message: There is not enough free space to store temporary Windows installation files. Try using Disk Cleanup, uninstall old programs, or move files to an external location such as a CD, DVD, or external hard drive.
it also mentioned i should uninstall avg anti-spyware - i removed this months ago :-S i'm now puttin my HDD drivers back to what they were pre trying to install win 7 so we'll see if it works

Run Disk cleanup and defrag. Best are free CCleaner and Auslogics defragger.

believe it or not i've done all that, just plain doesn't wanna work for me. would a format of C and D(backup) fix this? or even to combine the two partitions and THEN format? viable options? thanks a million for your help so far

You did the workaround in the link I posted to do in-place to your version? Did you extract and edit the cversion.ini file to 7077.0, then run setup from the files there?

Try it again after disk cleanup and defrag.

If you want to wipe the HD to try to force the installer to run, then back up your files and a backup image (if you want to have a path back) externally.

Boot the DVD, choose Repair My computer on second screen, click through to Recovery Tools and select Command Line, type:

DDISKPART
LIST DISK
SELECT DISK # (for Windows 7 disk)
clean
create partition primary
select partition 1
assign letter=c:
active
format
exit

tried all that, defragging etc now. will make backup image as well as files on external HDD, wish me luck :-D

If you want the 100mb System Reserved boot partition which the installer gives if you don't have HD pre-formatted (as these commands do) then exit commands after clean, boot back into DVD to Custom install, choose Drive Options and create New partition(s), format after it assigns you the 100mb partition.

Some people like the 100mb as it enables bitlocker in Ultimate, and puts the repair console available by tapping F8 at bootup instead of haviing to use the DVD.

sounds good, not bothered about bitlocker, am movin to home prem anyways. have tried booting from disk already but its just loading into windows :-(

Did you tap key given on first bootup screen for Boot Menu to choose to boot DVD? If not, enter BIOS Setup to set DVD drive to boot first before HD.

Oh hey thanks a million man, as soon as i booted using the Cd it was all a breeze, did take me several days to find a driver for my wireless card though, ha ha :-)
thanks again :-D
