Solved iTunes 9.1 screwing up...

So I used Apple Auto Update (like I have several times before) to update my iTunes and install Quicktime AND Safari. Now, whenever I run the shortcut or the program itself, I get a popup window w. a status bar saying that Windows is configuring iTunes, and it takes about two minutes to load. It's like iTunes is getting reinstalled every time. It's freaking annoying.

Windows 7 64-bit. This happened after I auto-updated. I auto-updated because, while trying to view Quicktime movies on my school's server, I ran auto-update and let it not only update iTunes but also install Quicktime and Safari, in hopes that viewing my school's quicktime movie in Safari would work well (it didn't, surprise surprise, but that's another story). Ever since, loading iTunes gives me this b.s. I've uninstalled everything and reinstalled it, and the same thing happens.

Suggestions? Other stories like this?

Here's a solution from the Apple Support Forums

This is a really annoying bug and seems to have something to do with XML that is used to share data across different programmes. XML is used to store your user preferences and it seems that if an XML file in another programme is altered in any way it can affect iTunes XML preferences.
I have overcome it by taking these steps (in Vista):

Delete the following files:

C:\Users\your username\AppData\Local\Apple Computer\iTunes
C:\Users\your username\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes

You will then have to agree to the conditions and run through setup one last time. It should then be set (until the next time XML files are altered)!

If that doesn't work, I would uninstall everything with an uninstall tool. Make sure that you completely wipe the system of all the preferences, registry settings and all of that.

By the way, if you're looking for a comprehensive video viewing program, VLC Media player will work wonders for you. It'll play pretty much any video codec out there, including DivX, XviD, Quicktime, WMV, RL, and more.

VLC media player - Open Source Multimedia Framework and Player

If none of the above works, the threads I've read online say that an OS reinstallation will fix your problem.

Lol @ OS reinstall for one program. Gawd....ridiculous.

Yeah, I <3 VLC, but actually WMP has done everything just fine for me so far. Just some stupid/inconsiderate wed movies are only available in QT, so I dled it to view them. Mistaaaake.

I'll try the XML delete and then a total reinstall if nothing else works. Thanks guys. I'll post results.

Tried the XML clear. = Fail. Will try the complete wipe and reinstall...but I don't want to do that at the moment so I'll just let it redo stupid pref files.

Anyone know if I can keep my playlists, ratings & song info (since I think iTunes, in its supreme wisdom, does not log things to ID3 tags but rather to iTunes library/other files) in tact thru a complete reinstall? Or will saving my itunes library file keep this idiotic XML problem thru the reinstall?

Thanks y'all.

OH.MY.GOD.

I tried three reinstalls. First, uninstalled thru control panel and used the Clean Up Uninstall utility. Didn't work.

Then I uninstalled thru those two programs, and then went through with a search for all things Apple (itunes, safari, quicktime, apple, applecomputer, etc) and manually erased all the info.

Reinstalled.

STILL doesn't work. Apparently Windows has to / iTunes must be configured every single time it is run now. WTF?

Is ANYONE ELSE having this problem?

I have problems since I downloaded Itunes for 64bit in Windows 7 system. All the taskbar icons changed and Windows no longer functions like it was. Even the color of the icons on the right side for sound, wireless, etc. have no color. If this is how Apple works, it really is awful. I want my Windows 7 back. I even uninstalled I tunes and it did not return to normal. Help.

Auto Update

The issue is the result of an incomplete install after updating.
To resolve this known issue will require the removal of all Apple programs including Quick time, Apple Updater and all Itunes and associated Apple programs including Apple Mobile and all Apple services that run on your system.
If these programs and services are not totally erased it does not matter how many times you re-install you will get the same result.
As stated remove/un-install Apple and associated services.

Regards,
Adrian

iTunes screwing up Windows7

Hi, I uninstalled all the Apple programs and then I went to windows restore to the day before I installed. The Apple Iphone programs are gone, and the computer is back to normal. Is there someway or website to go to that will install the program and not have the Apple program destroy your taskbar? If not, I will have to just install and uninstall when I need it. Thanks. Edwina
