Hello, I used to use the Family PC and whatever my parents used is what I had to use. Now that I'm in charge of my own PC. I was wondering what to use for it? I've checked out the Stickies, and decided on MSE and Kaspersky. I was wondering if I could use both or if that would hinder my PC's performance at all.

Also, after looking around I think I'll use

Revo to get rid of bloat/crapware
Firefox
iTunes
CCleaner
Defraggler
Malwarebytes

among other various programs like Nero for my editing needs. Unless there's something else you'd prefer.

Thanks for the help

Hi, WindowsAddict.

Congratulations on getting your own PC!

If you do not have an antivirus software installed yet, please go ahead and install MSE now. You can always switch to another A/V later if you aren't satisfied with MSE. However, no, do not run both Kaspersky and MSE together.

You should not generally need Revo. Add/Remove programs should work fine the majority of the time. Only resort to Revo for situations where the program you are removing, does not have an uninstall.exe or isn't completely removed.

You will also find that the Windows 7 defragger works just fine and should already be a scheduled task. Granted Windows 95 needed regular defragging but that is not the case with Windows 7.

Is the Windows 7 Firewall turned on?

Nero is kind of malware disguised as programs. What sort of editing are you planning on doing?

As Corrine stated, using two separate A/V programs is not recommended. MSE and windows firewall are a great combination, and doesn't cost a dime. Registry cleaners are not recommended either for windows7, it manages them well on its own.

Revo is a great tool to have around, and will clean up any trials or crapware that you don't want better than add/remove.

LOL! WindowsAddict is my brother, I tried telling him everything that I learned from here but he's stubborn as hell. Most likely he'll be using Nero WaveEditor for songs, the same as me. We had all our songs on the Family PC and something happened and some of the songs have a little "glitch" 10 seconds in where it'll restart, so I use WaveEditor to get rid of the "glitch". His PC came with 30 or 60 days of Norton.

In that case, I recommend the Norton Removal tool:

  1. Download the Norton Removal Tool and save the file to the Windows desktop. Direct download link: DOWNLOAD
  2. Double-click the Norton Removal Tool icon.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions.
  4. Restart the computer.

The Norton Removal Tool that Corrine recommends gets rid of all the junk that is left behind by NIS. Do that first!

Echo,
If WindowsAddict is your brother and he didn't listen to you what makes you sure he will listen to us?
Old saying....."You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink it!"
Let him experiment on his own and just remind him our forum will be here for him when he needs help.
