Kaspersky or Bitdefender?

I have looked at AV softwares very thoroughly and boiled the choice down to these two. (I have AVG Cloud Care, free for a year with computer, and will uninstall it.) These two have good reviews following testing. No doubt personal preferences affect choice, but what do folks think about these?

I have Malwarebytes (paid) installed. I'm not on a network, just a lone wolf with a desktop, no WiFi or Cloud, no gaming, no naughty pics.

Stev I have used Kaspersky for nearly six years on all my six machines and the only thing with it is I do use MBAM and SuperAntiSpyware to pick up the small fry - it is also cheap too mate.

The one thing it dos baulk at is using ADW Cleaner when one has to.

That is a tough call. Kaspersky is a bit more complex to deal with but they are both very good.

Yes I agree Wolfgang I have used Bitdefender as a free version but found it a bit naggy. Kaspersky depends on how you set the security levels and what you want to scan. The only feature that I find a tad OCD is safe money - good but very pedantic.

Stevekir, I'm glad to see you looking for a new anti virus.

For the last 4 or 5 years I always used MSE for a anti virus so I really can't guide you to a informed choice except the little information below.

I do see a lot of members use Avast but they also have problems at times.

I think all anti virus programs have problems every now and again.
What I have read, AVG it is a total problem.

One good thing about Kaspersky, if you choose it, ICIT2LOL will be able to give guidance if needed.

I don't use MSE because it's free but rather, it works for me along with Malwarebytes Premium.


Stay away from anything from IOBits.

I have had some problems with Bitdefender, but that was my fault because I was playing with Bitdefender settings without thinking like locking the system with a pincode not knowing that the keyboard of the laptop couldn't be used to enter the pincode.

I have set the security level of Bitdefender at the highest level and never have I faced an infection again with Malwarebytes alongside running, no problems with stability and performance or anything else if I don't touch it

I am running it as we speak and I'm a freak in anti-viruses, KIS2016 is the way to go. I used to use ESET SS5/6/7 and it was not nearly as proficient as KIS2016. BitDefender works well as a bootable recovery malware scan, but not as a base AV. I find it too bulky and consumes far too many resources (esp. while scanning).

All AV's I have tried have that, KIS isn't special in that if you ask me, but I find the opposite between Bitdefender and Kaspersky regarding resource consuming (my experience).

There is no Real evidence for lack of better words that I can think of right now, we are just speaking of experience. I will go and take a look at the virus charts tomorrow and see what's the result. I'm out.

According to AV Comparatives in testing the software in the month of October 2015,

BitDefender is technically slower, but just barely. I hadn't had a good experience with BitDefender either.

That covers your entire PC and only your PC, it comes equipped with AV and Firewall, among various other features.

Good choice. You really can't go wrong on either choice!

I understand that they used a clean install of Windows 10 with barely a thing installed, but the last thing is just what makes the big difference which is why I don't trust the performance results.

When it comes down to having more programs installed, some might experience that the results shown on the internet aren't what they thought would be.

I would do my own tests but I'm really not in that kind of mood. I think it's fairly accurate speaking from my past interactions with both AVs.

That's absolutely true. It really depends on what you have running already and how it chooses to interact with your computer system.

Funny thing is, I have a 6 month license for free unused from Bit Defender Total Security 2016.

Yep well like I keep saying over and over again with 50000 new malwares per day how can any AV possibly keep up with the sheer numbers.

I have used Kaspersky for over six years and I do a fair bit of daily stuff on the net and I can just say I have had nothing major get through. It really depends on the settings as whatever you go with - the default or configure it manually. Personally I set my six machines manually and use very high security settings only because I am a bit OCD with what I use - I don't use safe money any more because it is not the feature it once was not that it is no good just naggy and has in my mind a few bugs.

I still use the free SuperAntiSpyare for the PUP's and odd trojans and MBAM which very rarely picks up anything.

Best of all if one shops around it is also not expensive I can get a card for 3PC's and a 2 year licence for $69 and if you do the maths that is about $0.32 a day now anyone who goes tramping round the houses looking for free stuff that invariably doesn't have the features of a fully paid for AV has git to be so broke or miserly it isn't funny

Plus it consistently is very close or top of the ratings with AV Comparatives and Matousec.

Although it's a Russian AV, Kaspersky has proved itself over the years and has really worked it's way to the top of the AV food chain along side of other AV's like McAfee and AVG (both still need improvement).

I haven't had a problem with Kaspersky and it's fluid.

Well I agree G Force mate only I would never use AVG, Trend, Norton or MuckAfee again over the years I had so many problems with those brands being useless being one of the glaring issues.

Plus you will find their "removal tools" do not really remove much I always advise individuals if confident enough to go through their registry HKEYS CURRENT and LOCAL > software more often than not there are left over entries and kust delete them.

IF I had to choose another AV it would be Bitdefender or Comodo though the latter is very naggy.

I would never go with Comodo after their free firewall nags me to install some cryptic variation of Firefox with their firewall built into it. BitDefender lasted a week with me, I couldn't stand performance issues I had.

Those tools are quite clumsy even created by the vendors.

I used ESET prior, and Kaspersky has now taken it's place, very happily, I add.

Well I agree as Is adi Comodo was naggy and that Geek Buddy was a pain.

I have heard good things about Emsisoft too my doc uses it ans swears by it though I have tested it yet on my test desktop or looked in the AV Comps.

Anyway am testing out Linux Mint MATE right now (fed up with the shenanigans of Windows) and after a few hitches with installing on a SSD I am about to try their AV stuff which I think from what I have seen is just a firewall.
