Hi. I eventually got my Windows 7 re-installed again and updated (after having run Windows 10 on it) from recovery discs. To keep things simple during updates I used the pre-installed Microsoft Security Essentials until all updates were finished. Then turned off the internet connection, removed MSE, rebooted. Installed Malwarebytes from and sd card, let it update ran it, and all ok so made a system image. Windows flagged up there was no antivirus software installed. Then added my own antivirus. During reboot I noticed it said an update had been installed, so went to check installed updates and it had installed:

Definitions Update for Microsoft Security Essentials KB2310138 (Definition 1.207.3480.0)

This was after Microsoft Security Essentials had been removed. At first I thought it must have updated Windows Defender because there was no antivirus installed, but it says it is for Microsoft Security Essentials. When I view the details it says this update cannot be removed.

I don't particularly want it there - isn't this going to cause an issue when I have a different antivirus installed now (removed Malwarebytes again before installing antivirus, also from disk and then updated from restarted internet connection).

I don't quite understand how it installed this update without asking me as my Windows updates were set to check before downloading and installing. Also MSE had been removed. I guess after reboot, the internet connection started up again automatically, but even so MSE had been removed!

MSE "updates" are handled seperately from Windows system updates, and IS NOT covered by theWU update options.
.
I dont think you will be able to remove it.

It was downloaded during your system reinstall phase and put into pending until you rebooted.

Ok thanks! So is it a problem that it is there now? Because I am running different antivirus software. I tried doing disk cleanup and removing old windows updates but it's still there. I don't really want to reinstall from scratch again and I reckon it was there before I made my system image after everything updated.

It's almost certainly saying that it can't be removed simply because it's not installed in the first place ;)
If the install was programmed prior to the removal of MSE this sort of mismatch can happen - but is nothing to worry about.
